Linda Mason Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2025.
Linda Marie Mason (Schefter), 70, of Milwaukie, Oregon, passed away from cancer in the comfort of her home on September 6, 2025.

She was born on May 12, 1955 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the fourth child and second daughter of the late Richard and Cora (Wang) Schefter. Her family moved to Portland in 1966. After graduating from David Douglas High School in 1973, she met Charles Cavagnaro whom she married on August 16, 1974. They had three children, Misty, Nicholas, and Christopher, and were married 13 years. In 2000, she met the love of her life, Bruce Mason. They were married on August 7, 2004.

Linda worked as a bookkeeper and held various customer service roles until she retired in 2023. What she enjoyed most about her jobs - aside from the calls that would provide comical stories to tell her family - were the life-long friendships she made with co-workers and, most meaningful of all, meeting her husband Bruce. She could have not picked a kinder, more patient, or generous man to spend her life with. He lightened her load and made her happier than her family had ever seen her. They were truly each other's person.

She was a mother for more than 50 years and never stopped caring or worrying about her children and what they may need. One of her greatest joys was her role as a grandmother. She was there for her grandchildren from the day they were born and loved sharing photos and stories about them with anyone who would listen.

She experienced many hardships and tragedies in her life, probably none as significant as the loss of her son, Nicholas, in 2019. And yet through all of life's challenges and heartaches, she persevered and found joy in the little things. Spending time with her loved ones and dogs. Working on her garden. Shopping. Collecting trinkets. Decorating her home to make it the most warm and comforting place to live and visit. Curling up on the couch with one of her many cozy blankets. Making one of her rooms in the house a tribute to her favorite holiday, Christmas.

She was a master gift-giver, putting thought into what someone may want or need, collecting gifts for them throughout the year in advance of birthdays and Christmas. She was funny and often the life of the party. She loved to tell stories with a little "too much information." She was empathetic and felt the emotions of others deeply. There was no one else like her. She is missed dearly.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Cora Schefter; brother James Schefter; and son, Nicholas Cavagnaro.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Mason; daughter, Misty (Lucian) Latcu; son, Christopher Cavagnaro; grandchildren, Gabriel Latcu and Ella Latcu; brother Jerry (Melody) Schefter; and sister Lori Sandvig.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for cards or messages sharing your memories, stories, and/or photographs of Linda. Linda did not want a funeral; a private gathering was held with the immediate family. In memory of Linda, please consider contributing to a cause you are passionate about.

What can I say about my beautiful friend? Words cannot express what she meant to me. She was more than a friend she was my soul sister. My touch stone. Even when we fought, which we did sometimes. We always found our way back to each other.
Linda and I met accidentally when we both had a blog in 2008. A fast friendship developed, and we spent time flying back and forth to each other´s houses. Linda was one of the funniest people that I have ever met. We spent hours over video chat between our visits. We talked about our children, and her grandchildren. Linda and two of my other best friends were instrumental in supporting me through my divorce. It was such a dark time in my life, but she held me up, and encouraged me to keep going.
She was a master gift giver as that was her love language. My house is filled with gifts from her. I look around and see all the beautiful things from her, and it gives me comfort.
I never got to say goodbye. I was supposed to fly out next month to see her. I thought that we had more time. I think that we all did. I miss her so much. I´ve picked up the phone several times in the last few weeks to text her. Then I remembered.
I hope she´s dancing on the other side of the stars with Nick. Here is do silly photos of us on messenger.
