Lindsay Frost Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 22, 2025.
In January 1944, Lieutenant Robert W. Spargur left behind his pregnant wife Dorthey to pilot a B-24 bomber against Nazi Germany. In honor of his expected child, his crew christened their bomber "Little Butch", complete with a painting of a bomb-wielding baby on the plane's nose. Little Butch (aka Lindsay Frost) finally arrived, landing in Batavia, IL on April 25, 1944. She passed away on May 15, 2025 at the age of 81 years.

Lindsay grew up across the Midwest in Batavia, Cleveland OH, Manitowish Waters WI, and finally Louisville. She studied art at Lindenwood College in St. Charles MO, graduating in 1966, raised a son, and followed her passion as an artist and artisan. Her background was diverse, but everything she did centered on acts of creative expression. Her fascination of ancient cultures and history led her to work at Meadowcroft Village, a historic reenactment site outside of Avella, PA. There, she worked as a guide, artist, administrator, and even the village blacksmith.

This experience inspired her to begin creating bandboxes, reproductions of the elegant, wallpaper-covered glove and hat boxes from the 19th century. This business flourished for nearly twenty years and earned her a strong reputation for inventiveness, dedication, and craft that stretched across the country and as far as Europe and Japan.

She later returned to her life-long love of woodcraft, creating hand-carved sculptures, bowls, and spoons made from local, found wood, which she exhibited in galleries and shows around the state. Each piece was unique, guided as much by the nature of the wood as by her own creative vision. She wrote, "My grandfather saw the face in the wood. He taught my mother to see. He did not need to teach me. I see the face in the wood."

She loved animals, riding horses in her youth, and more recently devoted herself to Shamrock Greyhound Placement, helping rescue countless 'retiring' racing dogs from euthanasia and finding them loving forever homes.

She is survived by her son Chris (Candy) and grandson Logan, brother Rob, and sisters Connie (preceded in death by Luke), Kim (Joe), and Susan (Bruce). A Celebration of Life will be scheduled. I miss enjoying her company at Artists“ Social Group dinners, Louisville Artisan Group meetings, and at Walmart! She was passionate about her wood sculptures and Greyhounds.
