Lionel Gonzales Obituary

Published by The New Orleans Advocate from Mar. 17 to Mar. 23, 2016.
Lionel "Speedy" J. Gonzales Jr. went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the age of 82 after fighting a courageous battle of dementia and heart disease. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that he had touched in some way throughout his very memorable life. He was the beloved husband of the late Iris Barbe Gonzales. Loving father of Bonnie Gonzales-Wallace and the late Darrell J. Gonzales Sr. Devoted father-in-law of Brian Wallace. Son of the late Lionel and Cleo Spurgeon Gonzales Sr. Proud grandfather of Myndie Rosier, Danielle Wellmeier, Krissy Jeanfreau, Rachel Maynard and the late Darrell J. Gonzales Jr. Brother of Charles Gonzales and the late Wilma Gonzales. He is also survived and fondly remembered by his 12 great-grandchildren, the Barbe Family, and many relatives and dear friends. Lionel was a native of New Orleans, LA and a 50-year resident of Violet, LA. He proudly served his country on the Naval Battleship USS Kidd during the Korean conflict before receiving an honorable discharge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and never missed an opportunity to enjoy the company of his family and friends. He was a well-known auto mechanic in the Parish as well as "Mr. fix it." The Violations would actually call on Mr. Gonzales for his capability to fix anything no matter how big or small the project was, such as vehicles, washers, dryers, lawn mowers, carpentry, or electrical. He was a gracious handyman to his friends and neighbors, who would gladly "fix it" for free or the cost of the parts. Lionel was proud of his independence, but began needing help with things around the house shortly before Hurricane Katrina. His nephews, Christopher and Matt Barbe became known as "Pop's Right Hand Men." He thoroughly enjoyed his sister-in-law Jeanne's daily home cooked meals, graciously delivered to him by his brother-in-law Chris. These four truly exemplify the unconditional love that surrounded Pop's. On November 15th, Lionel suffered a heart attack that was a turning point in the decline of his health. His doctors said he couldn't live alone anymore, so he agreed to move to Pensacola, FL to stay with his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Brian. Brian was at his side every day to help, assist and sometimes just talk and share stories. Although Lionel's illness made him appear frail, he possessed strength, perseverance, and a good sense of humor. His courage is a reminder that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories. Lionel was well loved and will be forever remembered as a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a generous friend of many, who loved his country, believed in an honest day's work, praised his Lord, and treasured his family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, March 19th from 1:00PM - 3:00PM, followed by a celebration of Lionel's life beginning at 3:00PM. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony. I am fortunate to spend this past year with him. Got to know alot about the family, history of St Bernard Parish, Katrina and most of all, I was working on my truck one day and I called Pops Lionel with a mechanic question. Without any hesitation, he said, " go ask Bonnie Gonzales Wallace, she knows how to fix it!". Needless to say, I had nothing to day. I guess I had to put on my.big boy undies. Thank you Lionel for the hand of your daughter, I will take good care of her for you. RIP

I am so sorry for your loss, Bonnie. I was telling Danielle about Lionel at your wedding to David. He had a handkerchief in his hand that he kept turning over and over and over, throughout the whole ceremony. I think he was more nervous than you were - and he was trying not to cry.

My deepest condolences to Bonnie, our daughters Myndie and Danielle and our 6 grandchildren on the loss of Lionel. I just lost my dad in June of last year and know the grief and pain you are all feeling. Lionel was very special to me when I was a young man trying to make my way in the world. He always had a great sense of humor, loved to have fun and shared so much of his knowledge and time with me that it made me a much better man. I know he is with my dad Don in heaven sharing stories as they both liked to do as well as talking about their kids, grandkids and great grandkids that they loved so much. Lionel will be missed.
