Lloyd Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 21, 2009.
Dr. Lloyd Johnson Jr., 70, passed away May 19, 2009. He is loved and will be dearly missed. He will be remembered by many as a wonderful doctor and friend, and he will be remembered by his family as an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. His life was dedicated to serving God and helping others through medicine, to cheering on the Crimson Tide with friends, and to making his family feel loved and cherished. That family, as it celebrates him, recalls the days he spent with them cruising in the boat, driving out West in the RV, cheering through the lens of a video camera at countless sporting events and sitting in his chair at the dinner table.

Lloyd was born July 2, 1938, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to loving parents. He grew up in Florence, Ala., where he played basketball at Coffee High School and reigned as Mr. Coffee High, graduating in 1956. He returned to Tuscaloosa to attend the University of Alabama. He excelled in the classroom and on the basketball court as team captain, despite the distance from his beloved mother's cooking. After a business school course in statistics, he decided to change his major to pre-med. He graduated from the Medical College of Alabama in 1961.

He met his wife, Joan, in the University of Alabama Emergency Room, where they both were in training. A man of efficiency, he proposed in the VA cafeteria. They married June 25, 1966, and would have celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary this summer.

Dedicated to a life of service, Lloyd worked as an orthopedic surgeon for 34 years, "retiring" in 2004. He still gave Social Security exams once a week and continued to work at area clinics. He supported Christian mission work around the world. Lloyd believed in ministering to those less fortunate, quietly providing food, favors, diagnoses, support and a helping hand to friends and strangers in need. He loved the islands of Hawaii, blue grass gospel, and Diet Mountain Dew, always in two-liter bottles. He memorized the front nine at Turtle Point, where he was a member, and always carried a customized calendar to show off pictures of his wife, four children, their spouses and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Friday, May 22, in the atrium of First Baptist Church of Florence. The service will directly follow at 4 p.m. in First Baptist Church sanctuary. The Right Revered John Harper, of Birmingham, will officiate. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Joan Palmer Johnson; his children and their spouses, Lloyd and Holly Johnson, Tim and Kristi Smith, Todd and Betsy Johnson, and Brian and Ashley Kappel; his grandchildren, Alex, Ella, Lily, Gabrielle, Sienna, Ethan, and a seventh, a girl due in August; his sister, Sissy Scroggins (Derrell); and his niece, Mary Sue Ridgway (Alan).

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Johnson Sr.; his mother, Mary Sue Johnson; and his niece, Suzanne Scroggins.

Pallbearers will be David Crawford, Frank Hatchett, Still Hunter, John Lawson, Jim Northington, Uhland Redd, Ed Tease and Bob Yoder. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Florence Rotary and the Lauderdale County Medical Society.

In lieu of flowers, Lloyd's wife and children prefer donations be made to Habitat for Humanity, in honor of the loving home he built for them.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you all. I have such fond childhood memories of your warm home and hospitable family. Dr. Johnson always seemed so happy to have a band of cub scouts running around the house creating havoc. I was so looking forward to seeing Dr. and Mrs. Johnson over the holiday weekend after all these years, but sadly, Dr. Johnson was gone before our visit. Even so, I have happy memories of him.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Dr Johnson Jr. was one of the most thoughtful men I know. He once overheard me talking about needing to stop at the grocery store for hamburger buns..and then he brought me a bag back to the office and had bought those buns for me. He was very selfless and caring for others. God Bless You and your family!! RIP. Thanks for all of the times you went out of your way to make our day brighter. I am going to miss joking around with you!! I Love You!!

I am so sorry for your loss. The years go by too quickly! I knew Lloyd in high school. We shared a study hall and I was always giving him "advice" on how to play basketball:-) so he began calling me "Coach. I haven't seen him since he was graduated. Mrs. Johnston, I am so sorry that I didn't get to know you. I am sure you and your family are truly wonderful people. My husband and I share your sadness in an extraordinary person's passing. You have our thoughts and prayers.

I was so deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Johnson's passing. I remember first meeting your wonderful family when I began babysitting for "Little Lloyd" as an infant and then being given the opportunity to continue babysitting throughout the toddler years of both Lloyd and Kristi. I have only fond memories of the warmth and kindness of your family. You will always be a bright spot in my memory. Thank you for sharing your family with me. God bless you always.

Mrs. Johnson and the Johnson family, I got the pleasure of working with Dr. Johnson in March of this year. He was so wonderful to all of us. We thought very highly of him. He spoke often of his family and his love for them. He was so excited about the wedding in May. He was a wonderful doctor as well as a wonderful caring human being. My father was ill during this time and he called me several times over the following weeks to check on him. It truely warmed my heart for someone to care so much about someone they hardly knew. But that was who Dr. Johnson was and what made him special. We were all blessed for the time we knew him. He is safely with the Lord now. You and your family are in my prayers. May the Lord bless and keep each of you.

Lloyd and I grew up on the same street, though I was a bit older. I remember his parents and sister. In recent years I have enjoyed running into Lloyd in various places, often Walmart, and engaging in uplifting conversation. He was a very warm and caring man and I will miss him. I had the pleasure of sitting by Dr. Johnson at this past year's Alabama vs. Clemson game in Atlanta. What a delight he was! I had never met him before but knew of him as an orthopedic doctor from our area. He was so very proud of his family. We had a wonderful time cheering on the Crimson Tide but also discussing our families. I was very saddened to see he had passed away. May you take comfort in knowing what a proud father he was.
