Lois Kollar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2025.
Lois G Kollar, 95, of Foley, AL passed away peacefully he morning of July 5, 2025.

She was born on September 20,1929 in Rockford, IL to David and Violet Larson. Lois grew up in Rockford where she enjoyed playing sports and her accordion. She and her older sister June would look forward to their regular summer visits to grandma and grandpa Jersild at their farmstead in what is now Gulf Shores, AL. After graduating from Rockford East High, Lois attended Rockford College for two years.

In the summer 1948, while vacationing with a friend at a cottage on a northern Wisconsin lake, she met a young man from Indiana named Kenneth Kollar, who was staying at a nearby resort. They bonded immediately and, after a two year courtship, they married in 1950.

The couple settled into a modest home on Fairview Ave in Rockford and two years later, their first son, Keith, was born. In 1956, Ken was transferred to the Milwaukee area and the family settled into a new home in Muskego, WI. Sons Karl and Bruce were born not long after.

Lois was a dedicated homemaker and mother. With three boys and a husband devoted to Scouting, she gladly accepted the challenge of being a Cub Scout den mother. She relished the creative challenges that role provided. Lois was also active in the newly formed congregation of Atonement Lutheran Church in Muskego. She was a regular at ALCW activities and helped with the Vacation Bible School programs.

In 1973, Ken was transferred again and the family settled Crystal Lake, IL. Once again, Lois connected with church activities. She also found an outlet working part-time at a 9-hole golf course which was owned by a friend of the family. She would cater to golfers in the summer and to cross-country skiers in the winter.

By 1981, all the sons had left the nest, so Ken decided to take an early "retirement". They built a new house in Foley, AL to be near Lois's parents, who had earlier retired to a home across from the nearby Jersild farmstead. Lois's father passed away shortly after the move so, as planned, Lois's mother moved in with Lois and Ken. Once settled, Lois directed her energies into caring for her mother and several of her mother's sisters who lived in the Foley area.

The Kollars quickly became active in St. Paul's Lutheran church in Foley. Lois was again a regular at women's circle activities. She was also an active participant in a weekly quilting group.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Kollar, parents David and Violet Larson, sister June Fritz and brother Roy Larson. She is survived by 3 sons; Keith (Marianne) Kollar of Stillwater, MN, Karl (Suzie) Kollar of Golden, CO, Bruce (Ara) Kollar of Rifle, CO; and grandchildren; Kirsten, Emily, Camille and Sophie Kollar, and Edwin Sanabria. Mrs. Kollar was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Foley, AL. Memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St.Paul's Lutheran Church at 400 N. Alston Street Foley, AL 36535
