A private cemetery service will be held at a later date. The Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena is assisting the family. She was born on November 2, 1936, in Ridott, IL, the daughter of Oliver and Gladys (Saxby) Peifer. Lois was a 1955 graduate of Freeport High School. She married Marvin De Garmo in Freeport, IL on December 4, 1959, and he preceded her in death on June 8, 1996. Lois was a dedicated genealogist and volunteered in the Genealogy Room at the Freeport Public Library for many years. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, traveled extensively, and was active in the Red Hat Society. She also enjoyed monthly gatherings with her class reunion group. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne (Dave) Hoftender of Scales Mound; a daughter-in-law, Tina (Pat) Enright of Scales Mound, three granddaughters, Danielle (Tom) Shoemaker of Scales Mound, Emilee (Jacob) Stier of Dubuque, and Allysa Anderson of Baraboo; and two great-grandchildren, Billy and Evie Shoemaker. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin L. De Garmo, her son, William "Bill" De Garmo, and three sisters. The family would like to thank Dr. Mary Koenigs, the Midwest Medical Senior Care Center, and Hospice of Dubuque staff, especially her nurse Jessica. Lois was a dear friend from high school and for years later. She was a happy go lucky gal. We took several trips together and had a ball. I will always treasure her friendship, my deepest to you Mary Ann and your family. Marilyn Underwood
