Louis A. Mucelli, M.D. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2025.
Louis A. Mucelli, M.D. died on May 17th, 2024. He was 91 years old. Dr. Mucelli was a beloved obstetrician/gynecologist who treated thousands of patients during the 67 years he remained in his private practice in the Borough of Manhattan, New York City.

Dr. Mucelli received both a BA and a Master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. He graduated from the New York University Grossman School of Medicine in 1958, and completed his year-long internship at Greenwich Hospital from 1958-59. This was followed by his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at NYU's Bellevue Hospital from 1959-1962.

He was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and he was a Fellow of the American College of Gynecology. Dr. Mucelli was a great lover of opera, and for many years held an annual subscription to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. His musical tastes were broad, however, and he was also a fan of the McGarrigle Sisters and owned several of their albums.

Dr. Mucelli is survived by his son, Alexander L. Mucelli. His daughter, Tanya Coleman, predeceased her father in 2015, and was survived by her husband, Stephen Coleman, and their son Charles Coleman. Dr. Mucelli and his wife, the former Tonia DiSanto, had been divorced for many years.

Oh my goodness what do I say to this one kind doctor for whom I was a patient of his for many years. I cannot begin to tell you what an excellent doctor he was.
Well he did say I am going to continue my practice until I am 90 like his father .
If it wasn´t for him I wouldn´t be here today.
RIP Dr. Mucelli. Damyanti

Hi Doctor! I literally just found out you are not longer with us. I called you a few times over this year and after not picking up I decided to google you to see if I could find anything about you. We worked great together, probably the best years professionally speaking, thank you for teaching me everything I know today, and made me the nurse I am. I would give anything to have another lunch break with you eating sushi or having donuts from DD. I will never forget you.

Dr. Mucelli was my doctor for close to 40 years. He was the kindest doctor I have ever known and consider myself lucky to be his patient. Even after Dr. Mucelli needed to recommend me to a specialist, he still called to check in to see how I was progressing. He was simply the best. Keeping Dr. Mucelli and his family in my prayers.

Dr. Mucelli was an extraordinarily kind and compassionate gynocologist. He truly cared about his patients and their needs. I was so grateful for his medical care that we became friends and talked on the phone every year, often about the opera world, a mutual passion of ours, and we occasionally had lunch together. I will miss his soft spoken voice and his laugh and our friendship. I had hoped the family would have reached out to people who asked about him so we could have said our goodbyes in person, or at least been notified when he became ill and subsequently died. I would like to make a donation in Dr. Mucelli's name, but there is no information about what his choices might have been.

Dr Mucelli was a magnificent doctor and human being!!! He helped my mom deliver me and I was lucky enough to have him deliver my daughter. He was such a gentle doctor and broke the mold. My sincerest condolences to his family. May he soar among the angels.

I was a patient of this wonderful man for over 40 years.
More than a remarkable doctor, he was a wonderful, kindhearted person.
I'd see him 2x per year and he'd ALWAYS remember our last conversation.
He recalled the names of my animals and even remembered that my dad was a baseball fan.
No one really enjoys going to the doctor but I loved these visits.
Dr. Mucelli had a positive presence which was contagious.
In his latter years, follow a fall, he slowed down but kept his demeanor.
I'd still call from time to time to check in on him. Last we spoke, he wanted to adopt a cat.
I called today, hoping he was ok.
Unfortunately, I just learned about his passing.
May God rest his soul. You were/are loved, Dr. Mucelli.
Rest in peace

I have looked for Dr Mucelli for over 16 years and have never been able to find him. I used to work for him in the early 80´s and he taught me so much. He gave me a chance when no one else would, he believed in me. I never had a father and I loved him as the father I never had. I am who I am today, because of him and I will always be forever grateful. I can´t believe he lived his final years in Great Neck, only 15 minutes from my residence. I wish I had known, I needed to see him and needed to hug him one last time. I love Dr Mucelli and I will never forget you. You are now together with my husband Michael in heaven. Thank you for everything and for always being so good to me and my family, I will missed you very much. Love you forever Christina Patras

I started seeing Dr. Mucelli many, many years ago. When I moved out of NY I would still see and speak to him. He was an amazing, compassionate human being, and and incredible doctor. Not many doctors like him today. I will truly miss him. I'm sure he is in heaven smiling down at all the people he knew and helped.
