Louis Hastings Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 11, 2025.
Mr. Louis "Lou" Freddy Hastings, 81, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025, in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Lou was a strong Christian and patriot. His life was marked by faith, family and commitment to serve others.

Lou was born on November 29, 1943, in Bell, California. He graduated from Western High School in California. Later he met and married his wife, Sally. Over a period of years he continued his studies, graduating from Tabernacle Baptist College, (formerly Tabernacle Baptist Bible Institute) Bob Jones University, and Greenville Technical College. His passion for learning shaped his career and personal life.

Early in his professional journey, Lou worked as a teacher at Tabernacle Christian School. Along with his wife, Sally, they served as house parents to eight teenage boys from Tabernacle Children's Home for several years on a 75 acre farm. Later in life, he worked at Precision Technology in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. After he retired, Lou became a massage therapist, where he continued to serve others with care and compassion.

Lou had a deep love for the outdoors and adventure. As a Boy Scout, he developed a passion for marksmanship when he learned to shoot a BB gun-his first love. This enthusiasm continued throughout his life, as he became a member of the Greenville Gun Club. He co-founded the Northside Practical Shooting Club in T.R. and served as the range master for competitions. Lou was an excellent firearm safety instructor.

Beyond his love for shooting sports, Lou enjoyed hiking, hunting and camping. He also found great joy in reading and generously giving to others, both monetary and practically. Lou loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

For over five decades, Lou was a steadfast member of Grace Baptist Church Taylors (formerly People's Bible Church), where his faith anchored his life. A devoted follower of Christ, he loved the Lord with unwavering devotion and held a fervent desire to see others come to know Him as their Savior. As a prayer warrior, Lou drew strength and purpose from God's Word, always yearning for the presence of the Lord-a longing that has now been fulfilled in eternity.

Lou is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Kent Hastings; his children, Daniel (Linda) Hastings and Elizabeth (Ezekiel) Godfrey; his grandchildren, Karina Williams, Geneva (Jonathan) Coyle, Caleb Hastings, and Cole Hastings; four great-grandchildren, Trent, Tessa, and Trinity Williams, and Trevor Sayer; his brother, Charles Hastings. Through marriage, he gained a brother-in-law, Stephen (Laura) Kent, and a sister-in-law, Susan Rogers. Lou had four step grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Harley Hastings and Maxine Menefee Hastings; his son Michael Hastings; grandson Joseph Hastings; sister-in-law Peggy Hastings; and brother-in-law Robert Rogers.

The family invites friends to the visitation, Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:15 PM at Grace Baptist Church Taylors (5020 Old Spartanburg Rd., Taylors, SC 29687), followed by a memorial service at 4:30 PM.

If you wish to join in the memorial service via livestream, it will be broadcast on the church YouTube channel. Go to www.youtube.com and type GBCTAYLORS in the search bar. John and I loved Lou. He was a Godly man who cared and prayed for others. He was always friendly, positive, and willing to help his friends.
Now he has seen Christ face to face.

I did get a massage from Lou. It was weird for me because I knew Lou as a "gunslinger" and a tough guy. He will be missed. Almost every Sunday Lou would stop either me or my wife, or both of us to thank us for our service.

Dear Sally, I have only gotten to know Lou in the last 3 years and I am thankful for that precious opportunity. He was certainly a hard working man who loved his family and loved to learn and serve others and especially to love you Sally! One glorious day we will see him again!

Lou Hastings, or 'Fred' as I, his older brother, called him while growing up together, became a changed man at a young age of 19 when he turned his life over to Jesus Christ. But before his 'change' he and I grew up in a bad, poor neighborhood, getting into trouble together, and fighting with each other most all the time.

We followed societies 'culture' of life, 'Work, Play, Eat, and Sleep, while climbing the imaginary 'ladder of success'. All without any information or understanding of why we were here on earth. Raised in an 'agnostic/atheistic' environment we were clueless about God our Creator and His only Son Jesus Christ. Fortunately Lou and I discovered the Lord Jesus as a young men, both in different ways and locations. Being enlightened by God, Lou pursued a life of serving the Lord in many ways as the Lord directed him. I admired Lou, my younger brother, for his pursuit of training in the Word of God, with his attendance and graduation from two Bible colleges.

Yes I miss my brother Lou, but I know that we will be reunited in Heaven, and I look forward to that time. My prayers and condolences go out to Sally, Lou's wife and their family of many.
