Luisa Guiteras Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 11, 2024.
Luisa Margarita (Gutierrez) Guiteras, born on June 21, 1931, in Havana, Cuba, to Maria Josefa Olaechea and Antonio Faustino Gutierrez, peacefully passed away on March 1, 2024, in Coral Gables, FL, at the age of 92. Luisa was a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend.

Luisa, a true matriarch, devoted her life to her family. She married the love of her life, John R. (Jack) Guiteras, in their beloved Havana. In the early years of their relationship, they embarked on their lifelong partnership, Lorraine Travel. After fleeing communism in Cuba in 1960, they quickly re-established their travel business in Miami. Luisa was the dedicated mother of six children: Margarita, John A., Louis, Greg, Maria Cecilia, and Daniel. Her love extended to each of their respective spouses as well as her grandchildren: Carina, Richie, Lauren, Alex, Juan Jose, Aoife, Emma, and Elise.

While Luisa fully embraced her new country, she (along with Jack) yearned to return to a free Cuba, and she transmitted the love for her island to her children and grandchildren. She constantly recounted memories of her favorite beach, Varadero, driving in her friend's "convertible" from Las Dominicas, arriving home to Calle Linea to have a "merienda," and her apartment in front of La Embajada Americana. She poetically referred to her mortality as "cuando regrese a Cuba."

Whenever storms brewed, Luisa was the calming presence, relying heavily on her Catholic faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother. She attended Mass regularly and her rosary was always within reach. She and Jack raised their children in the Catholic faith, supporting the local Catholic schools of St. Theresa, St. Brendan, Lourdes and Belen. She often anticipated others' needs, compassionately and generously offering support. Her outlook in life was always positive and practical, sharing her radiant smile and kind spirit to everyone around her. Her ever-optimistic attitude was visible in the cards and notes that she signed with "Looking forward" - a sentiment likewise echoed among her family, and a memory which will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her most.

Luisa was adventurous in her travels, even completing an "Around the World" journey with Jack aboard a British Airways Concorde chartered by Lorraine Travel in 1989. She also took great joy in leading a yearly vacation with her family group - often spanning more than 20 relatives - to beautiful destinations, where she spent hours basking in the sun, collecting shells on the beach, completing puzzles, and drinking piña coladas. At home, Luisa's guava pie and "upside down de piña" were staples on the menu of family favorites, and her Chantilly, "ensalada de fruta" and "Pollo a la Villaroy" were often requested for birthday parties and other special events.

As Luisa neared the end of her life's journey, four caregivers - Agñes, Rafaelina, Maria, and Nuria - provided unwavering support. Their constant, loving care ensured her comfort around the clock. During Luisa's final chapter, the compassionate team at Catholic Hospice joined her caregivers, offering additional comfort and guidance during this tender time.

Luisa is survived by her six children, eight grandchildren, and younger brother Antonio Guillermo Gutierrez. Her extended family at Lorraine Travel likewise mourns her passing. They will always cherish her meticulous attention to detail and diligent work ethic.

A memorial Mass for Luisa will be held at the Our Lady of Belen Chapel (500 SW 127th Avenue, Miami, FL 33184), at 2:30 p.m. on April 20, 2024.

My sympathies for the family of Luisa Guiteras. I remember Luisa at the family reunion at Crescent Beach in 1992. Other families were lounging around the pool in casual clothes, Luisa, Jack and family arrived dressed to the nines. We were all impressed! I wish I had known her better - from what I've heard and read, Luisa was a wonderful mother who lived her faith. Rest in Peace, Luisa.

Keep up the good work at Lorraine Travel. Mom and dad will be proud. I remember your dad delivering tickets to my dad!
Your mom and dad were both high class individuals whom I remember with great admiration. They were true professionals who built not only a great, reputable business, but also a beautiful family. Luisa is now joining the love of her life up above. Wish I could join you on April 20th but will be out of the country
May she R.I.P. Big hug to you and the rest of the family. Olga Ramudo

Mami,

Words can´t express the emptiness and sorrow we all feel as of your passing but we rejoice knowing you and Daddy are reunited in Paradise.

As a Mother, Wife, Daughter, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt you were nothing short of amazing.

You were ahead of your time raising 6 children while standing side by side with Daddy in the family business starting in Cuba and continuing in exile. A keen mind for business while maintaining a tender heart for all the challenging times. I always admired your knowledge of the Coral Gables real estate market and know you would´ve made an outstanding realtor. You always showed your concern with how "business" was y los mercados.

As the heart and soul of our family you demonstrated boundless and selfless love and kindness to all including our spouses and your grandchildren. As of Daddy´s passing you proved how strong your faith was during the most trying of times.

I cherish the memories of you "shelling" on the beach at Sanibel and how much joy that brought you.

Te quiero y te extraño y siempre te mantendré en mis pensamientos y en mi corazón.

Tu hijo "lindo",

Juan Antonio (aka Johnny)

Mami,

Gregorio, aguantate!

I remember that phrase from you that day we were out on a choppy boat ride only because my older brothers routinely kidded with you about how I must have been your favorite!

There are so many things I want to say, but mostly I just want you to know how incredibly lucky I was to have you as my mother. You were entirely selfless, no matter what and the way you treated me, made me feel I was the favorite. Sorry brothers and sisters!

I remember when you used to have my Cadbury Chocolate Covered Shortcake Cookies for me when I would be dropped off at the office. You would also remind me how you were the only shopper buying 16lb Butterball Turkeys during all times of the year for my crazy diet when I was into bodybuilding. Speaking of diets, you taught me the calories in just about every food item. You also taught me how to balance a checkbook, something they still do not teach in school! Your handwriting was beautiful. I used to practice your signature and I perfected it too. You made sacrifices, all to support my crazy routines and you showed me how much I mattered to you.

I´ll never forget that one Halloween night, in my infinite teenage wisdom, I went egging houses and the cops stopped us and you had to pick me up at the police station. You gave me your word that you´d keep it a secret from Daddy and if you ever told him, he never mentioned it. You totally helped me from having to clean up that mess, literally and figuratively.

When I entered the family business, you showed ne how important any commission check from a hotel was or how we had to sell the right carrier to make the most commission off airline tickets. You made a difference in the way I approach work to this day.

These are just a few of the countless memories that flood my mind right now. You were my confidante, my biggest supporter, and once, my "partner in crime". But most importantly, you were my Mom, and the love you gave me was boundless.

You know how much it mattered for me to do everything I could for you when daddy could no more. I know he´s proud of the way I handled things and this is very gratifying to me personally.

Even though you won´t be here to ask me how the agency is doing, count on me to do everything I can to keeping Lorraine Travel at the top of its game because I know you and daddy will be watching over me.

I´ll miss you so much but I'll carry you with me in everything I do.

I´ll love you forever Mami.

Greg

Dear Mami,

You have always been there for me, through all of life´s ups and downs. I have faith that you will continue to do so, which brings me comfort at this very difficult time.

I am so very appreciative and feel very blessed for all that you did for me, taught me, inspired me, as I grew through all of life´s chapters. I hope that I can make you proud and be the best daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and friend, as you so lovingly taught me by your amazing example!

Mami, selfishly, I wanted and needed more time with you. But God had other plans. I will miss your physical presence more than words could ever express, but you and Daddy, along with Pepa, Nanny, Tia Maya, Tia Nica, and all our heavenly angels are reunited for eternity, and that brings me peace.

I will always cherish so many many memories....how lucky am I !!

Here are just a few of a very long list:

*** From a very young age, you taught me how to bake and to enjoy doing so! Your delicious lasagna recipe and also your very yummy Pineapple Upside Down cake will always remain family favorites!

*** When JJ and I became engaged, your words of wisdom still resonate.... "May you each always be the most important aspect in each other´s lives!"

*** When I became a Mom... you taught me ... EVERYTHING and
so much MORE !!!

*** Throughout all my life, you´ve taught me to be patient... a "work in progress"!

For these and so much more.... My sincerest, heartfelt and eternal appreciation!

I will carry you in my heart always, and will try really hard to smile and laugh rather than cry.... and, most importantly, to quote you, ... know that I will always be "Looking forward....." .

Your loving daughter,

Maria Cecilia ("La Quinta")
