Lynda Ferris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2025.
Lynda Grimes Ferris Lynda Ann Grimes Ferris, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on February 18, 1945, in Camp Shelby, Mississippi, Lynda lived a full and vibrant life centered around faith, family, friendship, and community.

She graduated from Biloxi High School and went on to attend the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where she earned a B.A. in Psychology. A proud member of the Tri Delta sorority, Lynda met her husband, Douglas Mims Ferris, Sr., during her time at Ole Miss. They married and settled in Jackson, Mississippi, where they raised their three children and built a life grounded in love, service, and strong community ties.

Lynda is survived by her devoted husband, Douglas Mims Ferris, Sr.; her daughter, Margaret Ann Montgomery; her sons, Douglas Mims Ferris, Jr. and Samuel David Ferris; and her seven adored grandchildren. She was a deeply loving and involved mother and grandmother, known for her warm heart, generous spirit, and delicious home-cooked meals.

In Jackson, Lynda gave her time generously to many organizations. She was a faithful volunteer at her children's schools, serving on the PTA and supporting countless school activities. She was a longtime member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, where she served on numerous church committees, including the beloved St. Andrew's Bazaar. Her dedication to service also extended to the Jackson Junior League, where she served on the board, and to the Tri Delta Alumnae Association, where she held officer positions. She was also involved with the Children's Museum and the Symphony League, always finding ways to support the cultural and educational life of her community.

Later in life, Lynda worked at The Everyday Gardener, where she combined her love of flowers and people. She was happiest with her hands in the dirt or arranging something beautiful for others to enjoy.

In 2005, Lynda and Doug moved to Oxford, Mississippi, where they made a warm and welcoming home. Her family fondly remembers the smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, her deep love of animals - especially George, the stray cat she took in - and the way she brought joy and comfort to everyone around her. She was a true social butterfly, always engaged, always curious, and always ready with the latest news and a bright smile.

Lynda's life was a reflection of her compassion, her faith, and her unshakeable devotion to the people she loved. Her memory will live on in the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oxford, Mississippi, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 113 S. 9th Street, Oxford, MS 38655, or online at stpetersoxford.org/give.
