Marc Stanton Elias, M.D.
Born July 10, 1981 in Joliet, IL
Died December 9, 2022 in Chicago, IL, age 41
Marc Elias was born in Joliet, IL on July 10, 1981 to his parents Lawrence and Mary Kay (LaRose) Elias. He spent his childhood in Joliet attending Troy Schools and graduating from Joliet West High School in 1999. He ran cross country and track and participated in numerous clubs while working for his family business. Following high school, he attended Northwestern University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in biology and psychology in 2003. He was a member of Delta Upsilon making lifelong friends and serving on the executive board. His days at Northwestern were highlighted with ski trips, Mario Kart tournaments, and a few nightcaps at The Keg or 2047. Marc met his wife, Laura (Vicini), in a sixth grade English class becoming junior high school sweethearts leading to an official and lasting relationship beginning December 23rd, 1995. Despite a long-distance college relationship, their love persevered, and they reunited following their respective college graduations and moved to Chicago. Marc began his career as a lab technician at Northwestern University. His love of science and hepatology led him to medical school at Rush University Medical College class of 2013, progressing to a Rush Pediatric Residency (2016), and then being accepted into the prestigious Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition fellowship at Lurie Children’s Hospital (2019). He was then employed with University of Chicago as an Assistant Professor in the section of Pediatric Gastroenterology where he was noted to be a loyal friend and treasured colleague along with being an outstanding clinician and teacher. Marc was united in marriage with the love of his life on April 22, 2006 at St. Raymond Cathedral Joliet, IL and went on to have three amazing children: Evan David, Addison Rose, and Nolan Patrick, all of Lemont, IL. He adored his children, instilling in them a sense of humor, love of family, music, good food, and kindness; all qualities he was renowned for by those who knew him. His children looked up to him, and he modeled a work ethic that allowed him to complete a rigorous training schedule to achieve his childhood goal of becoming a doctor all while being a loving husband, attentive father, adoring son, supportive brother, and fierce friend. He will never be forgotten by those he leaves to mourn him, especially his parents, wife, children, brothers Eric (Marisa) and Jason; nephews Austin and Sawyer, father and mother-in-law David and Betty Vicini, brother-in-law Scott (Carolyn) Vicini, sister-in-law Gina Vicini, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. He is gone too soon, but his legacy and the love he gave will never be forgotten. The family would like to thank everyone who has rallied around them, providing love, prayers, and support. It has meant so much in this time of need.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 15, 2022, from 4 - 8 p.m. at Markiewicz Funeral Home, P.C 108 Illinois St., Lemont. Family and friends will meet for a Funeral Mass Friday, December 16, 2022, at 12:30 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Church, 605 State St., Lemont. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to “Hope and Friendship Foundation” of Lemont at www.hopeandfriendshipfoundation.com or a charity of your choice that benefits pediatric research or animal welfare.

Family and friends of Mark, please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I only recently heard of this news, and it breaks my heart.
My fondest memories of Mark are our rides to Cross Country/Track practice. We would jam out to Oasis or Dave Matthews Band with the windows down singing at the top of our lungs. He was such a kind soul. Rest in peace, Mark.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Elias and his family. My daughter was a new patient of his and saw him only twice. My daughter (16 yrs) is severely introverted, and in her last visit, he gave her such words of kindness and even shared parts of his own story to get her to open up. I only saw him twice but was very appreciative of his kindness. Learning of his passing moved me to tears and I pray for his family and friends.

We are so devastated to hear about the sudden passing of Dr Elias, our 16 year-old daughter’s pediatric gastroenterologist. He did her scope in 2021 and found workable plans for her IBS and dairy intolerance and made talking about poop “cool”. ♀
Dr Elias was a true gem for our teenager going thru a tough time. What a loss and tragedy. Praying for his entire family during this difficult time.

I met Dr Elias when my son was very ill and he fit us in his tight schedule and changed the entire trajectory of my sons treatment. He made us feel so at ease and reassured us. He called me a few hours after our first appointment to go over things and helped us get into see other doctors. He will forever be remembered as a blessing to my entire family. My heart goes out to his family.

Dr. Elias was a part of my 3 year old daughters cancer journey for over 1 year. Every time he saw her during our many hospital stays, he always made me feel heard and comforted in his care. He was an amazing doctor and I read an even more amazing father and husband. My family and I are so saddened over his loss and pray for his family in this unimaginable time.

Our daughter met Dr. Elias when she was five. I can say he is the only doctor that she has felt comfortable with from her first visit. He was an exceptional man. He will be greatly missed. My husband and I will have you all in our prayers.

I worked with Dr. Elias at Comer Children´s and we bonded immediately upon meeting. He was hilarious! Always making jokes and making light of any situation, which made him such a joy to be around. We both loved to eat and I made sure we had the best spreads on our outreach lunch meetings. I am so saddened by his passing, as I know the void he leaves behind. Sending heartfelt condolences to his wife and children during this difficult time. He will be deeply missed

In the 11 months I have known him, he was always nice. He made sure I was able to collect the samples and blood I needed with no hesitation! I always emailed him seeing if I could join a procedure that day. Thank you for being the kind of person, everyone should be.

I knew Marc during his fellowship at Northwestern. He was such a humorous person and a constant positive presence around the lab. When he left for his new job at University of Chicago, his going away party was as fun and boisterous as he was: blasting Rolling Stones tunes, laughter and an exploding chocolate fondue fountain. (wish there was a photo) I'm so saddened to hear about his passing, he will be missed. Condolences to his family.

I was blessed to be the academic advisor for Marc while at Rush Medical College. It was during this time that I discovered we had many close connections, such as both of us growing up in the Joliet area. The bond was solidified when he told me about about his connection to Joe's Hotdog stand near (then) College of St. Francis where I did my undergraduate education. The fond memories of going there on cold winter nights to be warmed by the best chili dogs and fresh cut fries anywhere! That did it for me: I knew he was made of good fabric. I remember how awesome a person Marc was and how his family was the most important thing to him. I remember when he told me the good news when he was going to be a dad. The smile never left his face. Marc was honest to the core and the most genuine person ever. I am thankful to have met him and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

I was Marc's attending in the pediatric ICU during his training at Rush. I will never forget his sense of humor, good nature, and outstanding clinical abilities. One of the best residents I have ever worked with. His loss is devastating but his memory will live on in all of the friends, family, colleagues, and patients he has touched.

To Laura, their children and the entire family I send condolences on the loss of your beloved Marc. Marc and I worked in the same division at Northwestern years ago and my husband and I became very fond of Marc with his quick wit and sense of humor. We had the honor of attending your beautiful wedding. Praying you find peace and comfort and that you allow all the goodness that was Marc Elias stay in your hearts forever.
