SMALL

MARC J., of Lower Providence, a Staff Sgt. In the United States Army Special Forces, was killed in action while faithfully serving his country in Afghanistan on Feb. 12, 2009. He was 29 years old. Marc was born August 4, 1979, in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He was the son of Murray Small (Karen) of Mechanicsburg and Mary MacFarland (nee Hoover) (Peter) of Lower Providence. In addition to his parents, he will be missed by his brother Matt Small, sisters; Heather MacFarland Wellock, Jennifer MacFarland and Megan MacFarland, step brothers Travis and Tyler Baney and his fiancé Amanda Charney. Paternal grandmother Louella M. Small, maternal grandmother Dolores A. Hoover, as well as extended grandparents, Irving and Mary MacFarland and John and Gladys Boyer. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Quintin B. Small and maternal grandfather Richard J. Hoover Sr. Marc was a graduate of Methacton High School, class of 1997, he also attended the Citadel as well as Millersville University. He enjoyed playing soccer and played at all three schools he attended. Marc was a role model and a cherished friend in many ways. Marc was fondly regarded by all who knew him as mischievous, playful, and possessing the biggest most giving heart of anyone they know. He was a caring and beloved brother who was a close friend to many military and non military people.
He was an outstanding soldier, bright and athletic, competent and caring, honorable and accomplished. While he was committed to his military assignment, he had an additional strong interest in helping the Afghan people; in his short time there he provided medical treatment to 40-50 per day. He was especially fond of the children around him, and those he treated. He loved receiving and distributing small gifts to them.
Marc was awarded the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal and many others. He was a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha team medical sergeant assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne).
Relatives and friends are invited to Marc's Life Celebration service on Thursday Feb. 19, 2009 from 6 to 9 P.M. and on Friday from 9 to 11 A.M. at BOYD-HORROX FUNERAL HOME OF EAST NORRITON, 200 W. I came to "know" Marc only through news reports. Through this journal. As my son came home from Iraq I cried and thought of Marc and his family. As you deal with a year you never wished already passed I look at his pictures and cry for Marc and you.

While I am so very thankful, greatful for him... it doesn't feel right to say "Thank you". Noone should have to receive thanks for their nightmare.

But please know, even those who didn't have the joy or priveledge of meeting him still hold him in their hearts. He will NOT be forgotten. His team will continue in is passon to protect. And I will continue to do the only thing I can... pray for Marc, his comrades, his friends and you.

A year ago today SSG Marc Small made the ultimate sacrifice for our country in the small village of Faramuz in Khas Uruzgan District of Uruzgan Province in Southern Afghanistan. Marc was one of our elite Special Forces deployed with his team to train the Afghan Army, Police, and Government officials to protect their people. Marc died bravely in combat and will be remembered always. His team is back Khas Uruzgan District again now and have Marc and their other fallen comrades, Dave, Jeremy, Tim, and their interpreter, Imam in their hearts always. God Bless Marc and his family in this troubling time.

My deepest sympathies to the Small family. I recently found out about Marc's passing and was completely shocked to hear of this tragedy. I remember Marc as a child. I was couple of years older than him but that still did not stop him from knocking on my door to play. He was so persistent and persuasive and from that we had built a great childhood friendship. Marc is truly a wonderful being and will be missed greatly. What memory I cherish when I think of Marc is his magnetic smile and his contagious laughs! Thank you Marc for all the memories! Marc, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation. Like so many others you have volunteered to serve our country and protect the vary freedom America was built on. Please know Marc that you like so many other fallen brother and sisters in arms that you will never be forgotten and you are heroes to us all. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also paid the ultimate price on 5/6/08 while on a routine patrol in Anbar Province as an MP. His unit was ambushed and came under small arms fire and he was taken from us. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him and all our brave heroes serving in our armed services. I stand tall and salute you Marc and will forever honor the memory of you along with my nephew. To the Small family words cannot express enough the pain both our families now must endure and my prayer is that the memory of your brave hero carry you through each day as you cope with this tragic loss. Since the loss of my nephew I have written on every single legacy page of every fallen soldier and included a photo of my nephew. I encourage you to do the same to Aaron's page. I have done this to honor my nephew but to let you know your loved one is not alone and my nephew is with him and they are now in God's gracious hands waiting for us to join them one day. From the bottom of my heart please except my sincere condolences and may the memories of your Hero carry you through each day for he will never be forgotten!

Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free

I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

To Marc's Family-

Marc was a wonderful person. We knew him well in Fayetteville, and were shocked to hear about his death. We are unbelievably sorry. He made such an impact on everyone he met with his generosity, great spirit, and humor. He stood for us when we 'got the paperwork out of the way' at the courthouse since he couldn't make our actual wedding, and made it very special by surprising us with champagne in the back of his Jeep to celebrate. That's just how thoughtful he was. He was one of the best, and we sincerely hoped to be able to dance at his wedding. We will miss him so much, and wanted to extend our sympathies to you all, and especially to his fiance. A CO 2nd BATT 1st SFG (A)

Dear Family of Sgt. Marc Small,
When I heard about Marc's death, I was heart borken. It hurts me so much, even though i never meet Marc, that this war has become so bad and had to end someone's life at such a young age. Since I found out, I have realized that it is not right to be complaining about it "being cold outside." I just wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss, and I respect your family and very person that has family or is in the war so much. Your family is in my school's prayers and my family's. The parade today was beatiful and very touching.

Marc was one of my high school classmates at Methacton. I lost touch with him since that time, but what I remember about Marc is his infectious personality, his friendly demeanor, his humor, and his smile. He was the kind of person that made others feel good just by being around him. I admire his courage, his bravery, and his commitment to the well-being of the men and women who served with him in Afghanistan. I share in his desire to serve our country, as I am currently a physician on active duty in the Navy. As I prepare for my upcoming deployment, I will continue to think of Marc and his courage in the face of adversity. I want to share my most sincere and heartfelt sorrow with his family and loved ones. I wish I was able to be in Audubon today to show my support. It was an honor to have known Marc and to have served with him.

To the parents and family, I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to heal you as He gives comfort to you today.

He was always cracking jokes and laughing, a laugh that was contagious. I lost touch with Marc after Millersville, but bumped into him at an Eagles tailgate a few years ago. It is our family's deepest loss to not have known your brave son personally. What we do know without question is that he was a man of supreme character, deep patriotism, compassion, honor and courage; someone who sacrificed his all for his values and beliefs. It would have been a privilege to meet one of such valor and shake his hand.
Our country's strength is made possible because of men like your son. Know that his memory and legacy live on still in the thankful hearts of this nation. Also know without doubt, as we do, that he lives on, at God's side and is there awaiting that joyful day when you shall all reunite.

Murray & Mary,
My heart is breaking for you both. I cannot even imagine your heartache, especially Mary, who had been through a similar event years ago - I can remember when Murray was MIA. Please accept my virtual "hugs" as I wish I were there to share in your grief. Know that I will be thinking of and praying for you often. I thank Marc for serving us and for the ultimate sacrifice he made. Ray and I understand Marc's desire to serve and to do his best at a job that constantly put in him danger. Our oldest child, Michelle and our son-in-law, Brian are both serving in the Army, with Brian currently in Iraq. My heart goes out also to Luella, step-parents and siblings, and most specially to the love of Marc's life - his fiance. Carry on your dreams in his memory.

To Marc's Family:

My personal connection was more to Marc's family, rather than Marc, but reading the obituary provided me with a vivid reminder of how important it is to appreciate every minute of every day that we have with our loved ones. Marc's list of honors and decorations are a signature of a trully inspiring and accomplished individual and soldier. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Final Roll Call

Did you hear the sad news today?
A brave American Soldier, SSgt. Marc Small has passed away.
Called by the Supreme Commander over all.
Today he has made his final roll call.

Come fellow Warriors; let us reverently bow and pray
For our valiant comrade, who has fallen this day.
We’ll drape his casket with a banner of beautiful hues,
Those glorious American colors: red, white and blue.

That star spangled banner he gallantly fought to defend,
Unyielding and undaunted, he fought to win.
He fought bravely and he passed the battle test.
Now the Supreme Commander grants him, “eternal rest”.

With dignity and honor, we’ll commit his body to the ground,
The bugler will sound “Taps” and we’ll fire the volley rounds.
The final military honors we’ll render somberly and ever so sadly;
“Old Glory” we’ll solemnly precisely fold and reverently give to his family.

Each Memorial Day we will recall Marc Small’s name,
And attest that his supreme sacrifice was not in vain;
For this lasting legacy he gave to all generations;
“It’s honorable to respect our flag and to defend our great nation.”

So close ranks fellow warriors, for our ranks are thinning.
We must keep on fighting and keep on winning.
With pride and honor we’ll march and stand tall,
And we’ll proudly - proudly - salute “Old Glory”
‘til we too make our final roll call.

Farewell SSgt. Marc Small - Be At Ease; Rest In Peace

For the Commander, Carroll R. Michaud

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SSgt. Marc Small our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Marc. And to Marc it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Marc, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Marc’s family and loved ones.
