Mardele L Mandler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2024.
Mardele "Mike" Leona Litts Mandler, mother to Karen Mandler, William Mandler, Jr, and Lynne Snyder, passed away on November 25th, 2024 at the age of 94 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Her final moments were spent peacefully in her home in Jacksonville, FL, surrounded by family.

Known for her sense of humor, generosity, intellectual curiosity, and fondness for limericks, she was never known to turn down a glass of pinot grigio! She was also affectionately known as "Major" in her neighborhood for her take-charge attitude. She was an avid tennis player, winning many gold medals in the Senior Games of North Carolina, where she and her husband spent several months a year after retirement. She pursued many other varied hobbies and activities too numerous to mention. Mike will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Mike's family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing.

She is survived by her children, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with a sixth on the way. She was predeceased in 2012 by her husband of 61 years, Bill Mandler.

Mike was born March 18, 1930 in Woodbridge, NJ to Leroy and Ethel Litts. As a pre-teen the family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL where she graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High. She was proud that, while in high school, she participated in the war effort by knitting garments for the soldiers. She met her future husband on a blind date while he was visiting Ft. Lauderdale from Cincinnati, OH during spring break and, after several moves in Florida, Ohio, and Georgia, ended up permanently in Jacksonville in 1974. She was a devoted mother and homemaker, dedicated to supporting her husband in his career and raising their family.

The family is especially appreciative of the compassionate services provided by Hospice of Florida in her final months.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer's Association (www.act.alz.org) on her behalf would be appreciated.

To a life well lived. From championing the people/friends racial equality social group in South Florida during the 60's, to participating in monthly "moving feasts" with the Judy's, King's, Ferwerda's Badger's and Muccino's; to the yearly mountain vacations - hiking and picnicking at Wayah Valley N.C. (with friendly bouts of ouzo drinking, harmonica playing and kazoozing contests to liven the evenings). Mardele, you were loyal, funny, and one of a kind, and a much beloved friend of my mother for 50 years. My heart goes out to your family.

Mrs Mandler was one of my most favorite clients when I worked at SunTrust Bank. Every time she would come in her smile and warmth would bring joy to my day! I haven't worked there for several years and have missed her, and now will always remember her so very fondly. Her kindness reminded me of my Grandma (who was my favorite person). Rest in Peace Mrs Mandler. Keith Sabo

Mike and Bill were the most welcoming of neighbors. Very often we spent Friday nights on their porch or ours. She won a permanent place in Jim´s heart for her supply of her famous coleslaw. So many laughs, she offered great advice and was a wonderful mentor.
