Margaret Conway Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Oct. 15 to Oct. 17, 2016.
Margaret Conway November 25, 1928-October 12, 2016 In loving memory of Margaret Monica Conway (nee Devine) born November 25th, 1928 in Glasgow, Scotland to Anne Currie and Arthur Devine (d). She passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Beloved wife of the late Robert Conway and predeceased by her brothers James Devine, Arthur Devine, John Devine and sister Marie Deighan. Left to cherish her memory, she was a proud and loving mother to her five children: Stephen Conway, (Sophie Fournier) John Conway (Diane Sakovich), Aileen Conway (Ted Woodhead), Heather Conway (Patricia Rozema) and Maureen Conway (Ken Campbell). Loving grandmother to 7 grandchildren: Andrew Woodhead, Maggie Campbell, Jack Campbell, Victoria Woodhead, Michelle Rose Berube-Conway, Catherine Woodhead, and Olivia Conway-Gibb. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and lifelong friends in Scotland and Canada. A lifelong educator and learner, Margaret graduated from Notre Dame Teachers' College in Glasgow, Scotland and Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Following the birth of her first child Stephen in Scotland, Maggie joined her husband Robert in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan in January 1958. Four more children followed in the next five years, John, born in Saskatchewan, and Aileen, Heather and Maureen born in Victoria, British Columbia. Bob and Maggie's life in the Canadian Navy saw them living in Victoria, B.C., Mons, Belgium and Ottawa, Canada. She taught at the International School on the SHAPE base in Belgium and at Hilson Avenue Public School, Century Public School, Bells Corners Public School, and Crichton Street Public School in Ottawa and Riverview Public School in Cumberland. A much loved and respected teacher, she specialized in special education and was a fierce advocate for every child she taught and her belief in their potential always led them to achieve more than they themselves thought possible. She will be remembered for her positive outlook and energy in life, her intelligence and sense of humor, her passion for the benefits of travel and education. She was a great storyteller. She was a wonderful natural artist and her paintings have pride of place in the homes of friends and family. She had a generous heart and always made an extra place for any friend to have a meal, a bed and a hug. She loved her family, her extended family and those she treated like family. She was much loved and will be sorely missed by us all. Many thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at The Ottawa Civic Hospital and all of her friends and the team at the Duke of Devonshire Retirement Residence. Friends are invited to join the family for a Mass of Christian Funeral at St Theresa Church (Cartier & Somerset St. W.) on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 10:30 AM. A time of refreshment and fellowship will follow in the Parish hall.

Dear Stephen, John, Aileen, Heather and Maureen, My deepest condolences on your loss. You mom was a lovely lady. She was always so kind to me and made me feel very much at home on those wonderfully fun Friday nights at your home in the east end of Ottawa so very long ago. Maggie had a wonderful sense of humor and a great zest for life - and she will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with you. All the best, Diana
