Margaret Curran Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 18, 2024.
We are so saddened by the passing of our mother, Margaret "Peggy" Curran, on March 16, 2024. She lived a full 95 years of life. Peggy passed away peacefully on a beautiful spring morning surrounded by her family. A native of Ireland, she brought a "wee bit of Ireland" to America -- where she has lived for over 65 years. Peggy was well-loved by family, friends, and even complete strangers. Peggy was the loving wife of the late James Curran, mother of five children, eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her happiest moments were with her family.

In addition to her family, Peggy always made time for friends. Peggy had the Irish "gift of gab" and seemed to make new friendships wherever she went. This was one of many gifts - her ability to connect with people. Peggy was loved by so many. Some recent comments on her life mentioned that she was "one of a kind" and "loved by all who had the good fortune to have her feisty spirit in their lives". We couldn't agree more.

She and our father always worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for their children. Our father left a "good job" at Guinness in 1956 and emigrated for a better life in America. Our mother stayed behind with little Jim and Mary, while our father worked for a year saving for their passage. In 1957, they too emigrated to the United States and settled in Manchester, New Hampshire before moving to Milford, Connecticut -- where John, Kathleen and Margo were born. Our father worked day shifts and our mother night shifts at local factories to provide for their growing family.

In 1965, our mother & father sold their home in Milford and drove us to California in their station wagon. They ended up in San Jose -- where they spent many years. Both were so determined to provide opportunities for their children. Their respective work ethics were nothing short of amazing. As their children married, our mom formed a special lifelong bond with her son-in-law, Steve Gann, as well as her daughters-in-laws Rosie Curran and Stephanie McCarthy. Mike Fehr was also considered part of the family and she considered him her third son. We are all blessed with the lives she touched.

Peggy is survived by her children Jim, Kathie and Margo. Peggy is predeceased by her husband James and her daughter Mary & son John. Peggy is also survived by her grandchildren: Rosaleen, Domenica, Kerry, McKenzie, Meaghan, Molly, Maggie, Caitlyn, Sara, Zachary and Seamus.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to the Alzheimer's Association. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

The Curran Family:

My condolences to all of the Currans on your Mom's transition. Your Mom elicits fond memories of my teen years, "hanging around" the Curran family's Brace Avenue house and running into your Mom at McWhorter's Stationary, in San Jose, where I shopped for college drafting supplies.

I always got a kick out her "Irish-laced admonitions" and remember with particularity, her 1967 reprimand of Jim and me as we temporarily abandoned our paper route collections on the front porch of the Brace Avenue house, jumped on my Schwinn tandem bicycle and feverishly rode down the block and back. Upon our return she scolded us for carelessly leaving our collections on the front porch banister and "riding away lickety-split like two elephants on a bicycle"!

I wish to extend my warmest thoughts to the Curran family during your time of loss. Take solace in knowing that your Mom's transition is humanity's loss....but the ether's gain.
