Margaret MALKIN Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Oct. 22 to Oct. 24, 2010.
February 21, 1921- October 17, 2010. died after a long illness at the age of 89. She was predeceased recently by James M Malkin, her husband of 65 years. A life- long resident of Kerrisdale, she is survived by her sister, Frances Dodds, by her sons Hamish (Pamela), Peter (Farshad), David (Susan), Bill (Susan) and grandchildren Nigel, Jessica, Allison, Ian and Christopher. Margie was a woman of great elegance with a firm sense of duty to friends and family. She and her late husband Jamie valued their wide circle of friends and constantly gathered new friends around them, often of a younger generation. Mum was an early feminist although she never self identified as such. In 1960 with all four sons in school, she went back to university and earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree and then had had an almost 20 year professional career, specializing in adoptions, all the while maintaining her obligations to friends and family. She retired when Dad retired and their great interests were ongoing interaction with friends, travel, and their house on Bowen Island where they spent much time with family and especially grandchildren. Margie missed her husband terribly and after a courageous battle with her illnesses died peacefully at home with family at her side. The family wants to acknowledge and thank Cora Blanco who provided Mother so much care, support, and back up at home and whose kind devotion did so much to provide a constancy of companionship and comfort. We also want to thank the management and staff from Evergreen Nursing who provided such excellent and steady care and enabled Mum to spend her last months at home. To say goodbye to Margie (who specifically requested no service), friends, family and colleagues are invited to a Memorial Reception at the Shaughnessy Golf Club 4300 SW Marine Drive, Vancouver, BC, on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Margie's honour may be made to the non-profit organization of your choice.
