Margaret Nellis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 30, 2025.
Margaret Nellis (Mulligan), 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home in the Bronx on Friday April 25, 2025. Born in Aurora, Illinois to William and Marie (Lindberg) Mulligan on December 18, 1939, she attended Miami University of Ohio and earned her Master's degree in English Literature from the University of Illinois. She taught middle and high school before taking time to raise her two daughters. Later, she returned to the classroom, taking great pleasure in teaching at Chicago's DePaul University for over 25 years. In addition to her teaching, she volunteered for many years at the American Cancer Society. Margaret was a connoisseur of all things beautiful, from literature, fine arts and performing arts to elegant clothing, gardens and home furnishings. She was a doting mother to many cats over the course of her life, and volunteered at PAWS Chicago. One of her favorite spots in Chicago was the Sandburg Pool, where she could be found for 50 summers, soaking up the sun, gossiping with friends and swimming the sidestroke. She is survived by her devoted husband Bill, who was by her side for over 60 years, most of them in their cherished home in Lincoln Park, along with daughters Mara Nellis (David Wetter) and Ashley Nellis and their daughters Ruth and Tylwa Tomlinson and Sylvie Wetter. The family will be having a private memorial. Donations in her memory may be made to PAWS Chicago.

Bill and Girls, I am so sorry to hear about Margaret. I was on vacation and just found the obituary on my phone. We had great times growing up. My brother Pete passed away last August. Prayers to all of you.
Love, Pat Johnsen
