Margaret "Peggy" McGloin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2015.
In 1953, brave and adventurous teenager, Peggy Kelly, crossed the Atlantic, leaving her native Ireland, docking in New York harbor. Once there, Peggy made a life for herself as a wife, mother and registered nurse, always selflessly devoting her time to the service of others. Margaret McGloin departed this life on April 20 following complications from a stroke. She died with her loved ones at her side.

Peggy was born July 16, 1935 in County Leitrim, the third of Ann and Owen Kelly's nine children, all of whom she loved endlessly. She attended St. Clare's Nursing School in Manhattan, and continued to work as a nurse for many years. Peggy married Edward J. McGloin in 1963 and they raised four children, Eugene (Asako), Ted (Terri), Regina (Billy) and Marie on Long Island, NY, never forgetting her humble Irish roots. She was a grandmother to Emily, Danny, Jackson, Seamus, Grace and Conor.

Loving hospitality and an innate sense of empathy marked Peggy's life. No one will forget Peggy's ready smile and lilting Irish brogue. Her door always open, a cup of hot tea always at the ready, her ears, eyes and heart always focused on her guests, Peggy's home was your home. Peggy brought a depth of Christian love to all those around her, but mostly to her family, friends and patients.

Peggy's family wishes to extend a special note of gratitude to the loving caregivers who gave much comfort to Peggy in her final years, including many gifted home health care professionals, as well as the staff of Brighton Gardens and Rex Rehab & Nursing Care.

Peggy's wake is Friday, May 1 (7-9 p.m.) Mitchell's Funeral Home 7209 Glenwood Ave. Raleigh; Funeral Mass Saturday, May 2 (11 am) St. Mary's of the Angel Chapel at St. Francis of Assisi RCC 11401 Leesville Rd. Raleigh.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Peggy's name can be made to The Charlie Mulholland Catholic Worker House, 124 Perdue St, Garner, NC.

Though we did not know Mrs. McGloin, we know her son Ted and he is a fine man and a tribute to her. To Ted and all the McGloin family, we send sincere condolences.

Dear Regina,
I am just reading this for the first time. Never having met your mother, I wish I did! She sounds just like my mother! I am sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort knowing she is still alive, just in another place... a better place.
Love, Liz

My sincere condolences to the McGloin family. I am a volunteer with activities at Rex Nursing Care Facility and had the pleasure of knowing Peggy for about 7 months. Peggy was very kind to me and was truly a woman full of grace. I loved her Irish accent! She loved attending Catholic services at Rex, where she took Holy Communion weekly. May you take comfort in knowing that Peggy now enjoys eternal life with the Lord (JN 6:35-40). Thank you so much for sharing pictures of young Peggy on the website!
