One of my favorite memories of Nana was a trip to Scottsdale, where she shared one of her best one-liners: "The key to a good defense (referring to defensive driving) is a good offense," as she confidently weaved her way through town. That trip also showed just how sharp and composed she could be under pressure. After catching a late movie, we discovered we couldn´t cut back through the department store to reach our car and had to walk around the mall. On the way, a suspicious white van started following us. My mom immediately sprang into action, rushing us children toward the nearest point of safety, a gas station, while shouting at Nana to hurry. When we looked back, we saw Nana calmly tucking away her watch and jewelry, prepared to talk her way out of trouble if needed. She clearly believed that even if things escalated, she´d walk away with her hidden treasures intact.

She was a cool and classy lady. While not the most warm or cuddly, she commanded respect-respect that she definitely earned. We loved her, and she is deeply missed.
