Maria Floros

- - Maria Floros passed into the hands of our Lord on Wednesday May 16, 2018.

Maria was born on March 13, 1949 in Ithaca NY. Her parents were the late Nicholas P. Floros and Dee Floros and her sister is Gail Floros.

At a very young age it was quite evident Maria had an exceptional singing voice. When Maria attended Ithaca High School there was a very well known Senior talent competition called Mr and Miss Ithaca High School. One by one each contestant performed what they excelled in. Maria sang the famous Porgy and Bess song, " Summertime" with a jazz trio accompanying her.

The audience instantly loved her performance and consequently she won the title of Miss IHS. Everyone knew that after high school she would be attending Ithaca College school of music program. She was in love with opera and opera loved her. She had a mezzo soprano voice that was so beautiful many audience members when listening to her cried during certain arias she performed.

When Maria was a senior at Ithaca College on May 11, 1971 she received the special achievement award from the Ithaca College Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda the national music honor society. The achievement awards are presented each year to a member of the class at the Music School who is outstanding in scholarship and musical attainment and potential. After she graduated from Ithaca College School of Music and received her Music Education Degree she went directly to the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music as an Opera Fellow and received her Masters.

After receiving her Masters she continued furthering her education at the Eastman School of Music where she worked on her Doctorate. One of the highlights of her time at Eastman was performing two songs from different operas for the famous Metropolitan Opera Auditions where she was a finalist. She was outstanding and at that point easily could have been on the national stage.

Maria taught music at South Hill School for a brief time and then worked for Integrated Properties in Ithaca, NY for 27 years.

Maria was a very beautiful woman inside and out and the BEST sister anyone could ever ask for. She always thought of others before thinking of her self.

We would like to express our gratitude to the staff at the Cayuga Medical Center and especially to the staff at the Hospicare Facility of Ithaca.

Funeral services will be celebrated at St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 1 pm with burial to follow at the Lakeview Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church.
