Maria Navarro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2025.
Maria Victoria Navarro (Portu), 86, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia after battling Vascular Dementia and Parkinson's disease.

Born on February 10, 1939, in Caibarien, Cuba, a coastal town that instilled her love of the beach throughout her entire life. Maria's life was a testament to resilience, faith, and love. In 1961, she married Carlos Blas Navarro in Havana, and together they embarked on a courageous journey to the United States. Leaving behind their homeland, they embraced the challenges of starting anew with unwavering determination. Maria's deep faith was her guiding light, sustaining her through the uncertainties of immigration and helping her build a life filled with purpose and gratitude. She often reminded those around her that "with God, all things are possible," a belief that shaped every aspect of her life.

After settling in the United States, Maria and Carlos moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where they dedicated themselves to learning English, furthering their education, and establishing a home rooted in love and tradition. It was there that they began their family-Maria's greatest joy. She cherished motherhood above all else and found immense fulfillment in raising her three sons: Carlos A. Navarro (Tricia), Gabriel M. Navarro (Angela), and Daniel A. Navarro (Tracy). Her devotion extended to her beloved grandchildren-Thomas (Paige), Davis, Grace, Luke, Matthew, and Tyler-whom she adored beyond measure.

Maria had a distinguished career as an executive assistant for several small companies before finding her true professional calling at Marist School in Atlanta as the Assistant to the Dean of Studies. Her dedication and warmth left a lasting impact on colleagues and students alike.

A woman of boundless generosity and hospitality, Maria delighted in bringing people together through food, music, and laughter. Her Cuban cuisine was legendary among family and friends, and she ensured that every gathering was filled with joy, dancing, and an abundance of delicious meals. She believed that relationships required nurturing and made it a priority to stay connected with loved ones daily-a practice that will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Maria's home was always immaculate and welcoming; whether planned or spontaneous, visitors were greeted with warmth and elegance. She carried herself with grace and style, embodying the essence of a true lady who made everyone feel special in her presence. Her holiday traditions-rooted in the customs of her Cuban upbringing-will be lovingly upheld by those she leaves behind.

Even as she faced late-stage dementia, Maria's love remained steadfast. She never forgot the names of her children or grandchildren, a testament to the strength of her devotion and daily connections with them. Her wisdom, laughter, and unwavering love will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents Evelio and Victoria Portu and her beloved sister Maria del Carmen (Tita) Peña. She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Carlos Blas Navarro; their three sons and daughters-in-law; six cherished grandchildren; and countless friends who considered her family.

A Funeral Mass will be held on March 25, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, located at 7171 Glenridge Drive in Atlanta, Georgia. Monsignor Richard Lopez, a life-long family friend will preside over the Mass. A reception will be held immediately following at the Stapleton center at St. Jude's. In lieu of flowers, please make online gifts in memory of Maria Navarro to the Dementia Society of America. www.DementiaSociety.org/donate.

Maria's legacy is one of love, faith, family, and friendship-a life well-lived and deeply cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind.

Dear Danny & Tracy,
What a pleasure it was to be with Carlos & Maria on so many family occasions. Maria clearly loved to be with her children and grandchildren and of course she was a picture of style and grace. My favorite memory of Maria will always be of her opening her kitchen to me, teaching me to make Boliche. To be invited into one´s home is honor enough but to be asked into the kitchen of such a fantastic cook was a privilege. Maria shared with me memories of her life in Cuba as she walked me through the steps to make the delicious roast. Her love for Carlos was palpable as she shared details of coming to America as a young bride and starting their family. Before I knew it the roast was finished cooking but not before Maria also taught me to make tostones and Cuban coffee. What a great morning!
Mike and I are sorry that we can´t attend the funeral and share in what will certainly be a memorable celebration of Maria´s life. Our sincere condolences to the entire Navarro family...most especially dear Carlos. May you take comfort in many fond memories of your sweet mother.
Big Hugs.
Peace be with you.

Carlos, I met you and Maria some years ago at Saint Brigid. I seem to remember that we talked on Sundays about Church and American politics. What struck me was how you were always both impeccably dressed. I could tell you treasured Maria because you were never far from her and I could see love in your eyes. May you be comforted remembering the love you shared for so many years.

Whadzen and I would like to offer our most sincere condolences to Maria's family. She was such a beautiful person inside and out! Since the day we met in Westbury, it was clear she loved her family dearly, as she would always share stories about them. She loved to talk about her sons and their families...it was obvious she was very proud of all of you. She never failed to ask us about our boys and would listen with genuine interest about our latest news. I especially loved when Carlos would make us laugh and she joined in. Maria will be missed so much in our neighborhood. Love, Whadzen and Mariela

Dear Carlos and family. I met you all at Marist. Maria and her big smile always welcome all the moms and made us feel at home. Since we had Spanish as our mother language, we chit chat, laughed and compered notes on our lives and children. Through the years we remembered those times and missed our laughs.
Maria, I know you are in heaven welcoming everyone with your smile. Carlos and the family will miss you but you are there with them, just in another room, smiling at them always. Hasta luego amiga, que Dios te bendiga.

Dear Danny, Tracy, Matthew and Tyler, and family. We are sending our deepest condolences for the loss of your beautiful and sweet mother. One of my memories of your mom was in your basement when you first moved in your house we had a get together and your mom and dad were there and your mom brought the most delicious food. And I know it was made with love. Sending you so much love and hugs at this most difficult time. With much love the Sterlitz family.

I had the greatest honor to serve as Maria´s pharmacist for many years. She truly touched my heart on many occasions and I soaked up her stories of starting her life together with Carlos. She gave me some of the best mom advice as I grew my family. The highlight of my day would be to watch them together often as Carlos held the door for her and an umbrella over her head in the bright sun. (I would tell my husband, look-that is absolutely the most beautiful love story). They are a beautiful example of our Catholic faith that I have been blessed to have in my life. Maria was such an amazing woman inside and out, and I know Christ opened His arms for her. You all are in our prayers. With love, Jennifer Shannon

Tia Toty (Madrina) you will be so missed. You and (Tio Carlos) were my advisers in many things the last few years. Your advice and love when my mom was passing meant so much and truly eased me at not so great moments. You were an example of what a wife, mother and grandmother should be. We will miss you. Rest in peace!
Love you, Carminita

I will miss you so much, I loved our telephone conversations and our infantile jokes about anything and everything. You my dear Toty held the family together. The love for my brother, sons, grandchildren are to be recognized as the great Matriarch of the Navarritos. I for one have and will always be grateful, you were young and assumed responsibility for my life in this wonderful Country. I love you today and always.
