MARILYN POWELL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 18, 2023.
POWELL, MARILYN Peacefully, on February 13, 2023, after a sudden diagnosis and brief battle with cancer. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Dan McLaughlin; and by her parents, Winifred and Ruric; her brother, John; and sister, Gwyneth. Born and raised in Toronto, Marilyn received her BA from University College at the University of Toronto. She went on to earn a PhD in English literature from Harvard University. Early in her career, she taught at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. A medievalist at heart, she found a new calling, and professional home, back in Toronto, as a writer, broadcaster and producer with CBC radio and television. For nearly 40 years, she was nationally recognized for her work on IDEAS, CBC Radio's program of contemporary thought. Nothing escaped her curiosity, sharp intellect and artistry: from the music of Mahler, to the ideas of Freud and Jung, to endangered frogs, sexy orchids, the nature of wisdom, flying, walking, and so much more. Marilyn put her heart and soul into every single interview and documentary she produced, and won many prestigious awards. Her writing was also published in short story collections and in legendary magazines, including Saturday Night, The Canadian Forum, and Books in Canada. Marilyn was devoted to her blue point Siamese cats; passionate about yoga, sculpting and painting; and always savoured a good cup of freshly brewed coffee. She adored ice cream, a pleasure she shared in her book, Cool, The Story of Ice Cream. Marilyn treasured time with friends who, over the years, became like family. Her welcoming smile said it all. She is deeply mourned by friends and colleagues alike, all across the country. Heartfelt thanks to Almerinda Dantas and Alice Dantas, who ensured that Marilyn's last weeks were filled with love, tender care and family. As Marilyn requested, no formal service will be held. Donations in her memory may be made to the Charity of Your Choice.

I was fortunate to study with Marilyn at Sarah Lawrence in 1969-70, taking a seminar on "Romance and the Novel", which was half on medieval romance and half on novels that shared their concerns - from Dickens to Henry James to Tolkien! Even then, this unconventional approach revealed the breadth of her thinking. At the same time, this was paired with a tutorial on Chaucer. Working 1:1, she was a lively and inspiring teacher, who had the knack of leading you just up to the point at which you could make the leap of insight for yourself. She became my advisor and encouraged my move to Canada for grad school, and even though I left the academic world behind, I always regarded her as one of the people who made a difference in my life. Over the decades, I loved hearing her voice when she turned up on the CBC. We were all so lucky to have had the opportunity to share in her broad range of interests and her rich, inquiring mind.

I didn't know Marilyn well but our paths crossed at CBC Radio from time to time. I respected and admired her work a great deal. She was so thoughtful and refreshing and such a pro....just a delight to be in her presence. Condolences to all who loved her.
