I was fortunate to study with Marilyn at Sarah Lawrence in 1969-70, taking a seminar on "Romance and the Novel", which was half on medieval romance and half on novels that shared their concerns - from Dickens to Henry James to Tolkien! Even then, this unconventional approach revealed the breadth of her thinking. At the same time, this was paired with a tutorial on Chaucer. Working 1:1, she was a lively and inspiring teacher, who had the knack of leading you just up to the point at which you could make the leap of insight for yourself. She became my advisor and encouraged my move to Canada for grad school, and even though I left the academic world behind, I always regarded her as one of the people who made a difference in my life. Over the decades, I loved hearing her voice when she turned up on the CBC. We were all so lucky to have had the opportunity to share in her broad range of interests and her rich, inquiring mind.

I didn't know Marilyn well but our paths crossed at CBC Radio from time to time. I respected and admired her work a great deal. She was so thoughtful and refreshing and such a pro....just a delight to be in her presence. Condolences to all who loved her.
