I was incredibly sorry to hear of Mario's passing. As a nervous and uncertain new foreign graduate student, far from home, at CMU in the Fall of 1973 I was the fortunate recipient of his warm smile, his helping hand, his friendship and his teaching. He provided me plenty of moral support through some tough times early on and helped to set me on my eventual career path. He was a very creative researcher and, besides being great fun to work with, he taught me a great deal technically in the area of programming languages, software engineering, and systems programming. He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to family. RIP

I am so sad to hear this news. Mario was an incredibly kind and gentle man. He was one of those brilliant academics who was meant to teach, and he spread the joys of learning to others. He steered me in my career in my earliest days at CMU, and he was instrumental in my decision to join the SEI back when it first started. I will always admire Mario for caring for people as people--not just co-workers or students or colleagues. I'm sad to hear the news of his death, and I'm a little shocked to hear it too--sometimes, you just don't think of people like Mario as not being part of the landscape. I'm taking this time to rejoice in the incredible person that he was and in knowing that he helped so, so many people in his life. My heartfelt condolences to his family, especially to you, Josephine. Many hugs for you all.

Gentle, sweet Mario. The world was a better place with you in it. And your dry humor made our shared work situations long ago at CMU much more fun.
