Retired Leominster firefighter, Army Vet; 91

LEOMINSTER -- Mario P. Lanza, 91 years old, of Leominster, died November 11, 2015 in his home surrounded by his family. He is survived by two daughters, Linda E. Baker and her husband, Stephen, of Leominster and Nancy L. Corbett and her husband, Thomas, of Woodbridge, VA; a grandson, Michael J. Corbett of Woodbridge, VA.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Barbara E. (Davis) Lanza, his brother, Ubaldo Lanza and his sister, Margaret Lanza.

Mario served in the United States Army from July 1943 until March 1946, seeing action in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe as a 2nd class Gunner. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Victory Medal. He was appointed as a Provisional Call Firefighter on March 7, 1955 and assigned to Engine 2, and appointed a Permanent Call Firefighter on February 12, 1957. On September 30, 1961, he was made a Permanent Firefighter, retiring as the driver of Ladder 1 on January 31, 1988.

Mario was born August 1, 1924 in Leominster, son of Vittorio and Angela (Maciose) Lanza and was a lifelong resident. He was a member of St. Anna Parish, the Leominster Firefighter's Relief Association and Hose 4.

The family extends their sincere appreciation and gratitude to HealthAlliance Home Health & Hospice for their support. A special thank you to his care attendants for their friendship and compassion.

LANZA -- Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, from the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., Leominster, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anna Parish, 194 Lancaster St., Leominster. Burial with military honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster. Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 16, from 5-7 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to a charity of your choice. www.richardsonfuneralhome.net
