MARK HALPERN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2022.
HALPERN, MARK On Sunday, March 13, 2022, at age 62, Trevor Mark Halpern passed away peacefully at his home in Denenchofu, Tokyo, surrounded by his loving family. Born in North Warren, Pennsylvania, Mark lived mostly in Toronto before immigrating to Japan in 1993. Mark is survived by his beloved wife Tomoko, adored children Aska and Randy, cherished siblings Howard, Chaia (Moshe), Emily, John (Ann) and sister-in-law Akiko (Tomonobu). He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews Sarah, William, Noah, Tetsuro and Masayo, and by his loving cousins and his many friends. Mark was wonderful: brilliant, funny, elegant, erudite, generous, and deeply appreciated for his exceptionally fine character. He was a published author of beautifully written and extremely humorous short stories about Westerners living in Japan, as well as an outstanding jazz musician. Mark was an accomplished solicitor licensed in Canada, England, Wales, and Japan. He earned his undergraduate, J.D. and MBA at the University of Toronto, and his LL.M. (Commercial Law) at the University of Cambridge. His distinguished career began in Toronto at the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, Ontario Ministry of Financial Institutions, Blake, Cassels & Graydon, and the Canadian Department of Justice as a tax litigator. After moving to Japan, Mark worked at Nishimura & Sanada, then Aiba & Partners, before opening his own firm, Law Office of T. Mark Halpern, specializing in international shipping sales. Memorial donations can be made to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto at: http://gofundraise.sickkidsfoundation.com/goto/Mark_Halpern or to the charity of your choice.

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Mark when he attended Montreal University for the summer. He was quiet and very thoughtful. My school mate Brad Redrick and I were US students attending French immersion classes. He and Hellen and many of the other students helped me to adjust to life in another foreign place. I will always remember his thoughtfulness

Mark was funny and smart and caring and generous and very perceptive. We met in law school and stayed friends. He led a fulfilling life, full of curiosity, travel, music, love. Gone far too soon.

Fellow longtime Tokyo resident Mark was my best friend of nearly three decades here in Japan. He was my cousin-in-law, my inspiration, my sounding board in times of distress, and supported my entrepreneurship as my pro bono (at his insistence) lawyer. I will miss his wit, his kindness, his scintillating intellect, and his friendship. Such a generous soul. Life will not be the same without him.
