Mark William Phillips, born February 4, 1949, in Columbus, Ohio to William Hilbert and Dorothy Geese and passed away on November 3, 2024, in San Leon, Texas. His adoptive father, John "Bob" Phillips, and Dorothy Phillips preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Kelly Phillips, his son, Lee Hall, and his daughter, Garrett Phillips, who were a source of great pride and joy. Mark also leaves behind his siblings: Johnny Phillips, Dotti Smith, Robert Phillips, Michael Hilbert, and Michelle Crager, along with numerous nieces and nephews: Robin Phillips, Chaun Phillips, Max Phillips, Shawn Phillips, Jenni Wycough, Tiffany May-Phillips, Dean Johnson, Jo-Ann Smith, Teddie Johnson and many, many great nieces and nephews. Mark's life was enriched by the love of his family, who will carry forward his memory with affection and respect.

In 1955, Mark moved to California with his family. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970, where he drove lead track, embodying courage and dedication to his country. A skilled carpenter, shipwright and boat captain, Mark's craftsmanship left a lasting impact on countless projects in his community.

Mark had a deep love for older boats, golf, and western movies, interests that brought him joy and relaxation. In his younger years, he was passionate about sailboat racing, an activity that fueled his love for the water and adventure.

In honor of Mark's memory, donations to the PTSD Foundation of America (ptsdusa.org) or Wounded Warrior Project (supportwoundedwarriorproject.org) are kindly requested in lieu of flowers.

A memorial service will be held for Mark's family and friends are invited to join in celebrating the life of a man who gave so much of himself to others.

I have only a few memories of my big brother, but they are still vivid in my mind from over 50 years ago, such as the trip to the pharmacy soda bar or the mini bike track race or his trip to California on a 250 motorcycle. My sister and I always wanted to go see Mark, but unfortunately never did. As I read the obituary several times, I find that we actually had much in common. I would have really loved to have played golf with Mark, Garrett, and my son Tyler. I would have also loved to have spent time talking about boats and his carpenter skills, and show him the pictures I have with him. I will miss you my big brother. Love you!

Thank you all for sharing your stories. I love hearing about the person I´ve barely knew. I hadn´t seen him since our father passed away in 1972 but dreamed of seeing him again someday, somehow. I talked with him several times on the phone and we sent each other a few texts. But they never seemed to be long enough. From your stories, it makes me even more sad that we didn´t get to spend more time together. My only hope is that he knew I loved him dearly. Until we see each other again, big brother! Love you! -Mickey

I carry so many experiences and memories of Mark. We used to go to N. California to our "ranch" next to the Marble and Siskiyou Mountains. We
loved to explore this rugged and beautiful place. Many times we ended up on old logging roads and wagon trails trying to figure our way out of there. One of my best memories was when Mark's brother Johnny came to stay with us for a few months. Mark was so happy to have the time with him. We also were good friends with Medicine Man and Ceremonial Leader Charlie Red Hawk Thom. A dedicated Karuk Native American elder, Mark built his Eath Circle Office from scratch for just the love of this man. We were blessed to be able to do Sweat Lodges with Charlie. Mark would give the shirt off his back if someone needed it. There are many people in our Clear Lake Community who benefited from Mark's kindness and generousity. He is missed so much but his good heart fills us with love and respect. Enjoy your next journey my dear Phillips Bird.

One of the funniest times I had with Mark, was when he played Mr. and Mrs. Pig with his big toes. It was one of the funniest times that I had with him.
