Markie (Peterson) Lydon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 19, 2024.
Washington - Markie (Peterson) Lydon, age 78, of Arlington, SD passed away peacefully attended by her sister Linda Goodell, at 10:37am June 27th, 2024 in Washington, DC.

There will be no memorial service.

Markie was born Sept 23rd, 1945, in Arlington, SD to Chuck and Faye Peterson. In 1952, the family moved from Arlington to the old Alice Glawe farm 7 miles north where she attended grade school titled District #37, Laketon Township . She graduated from Arlington High School in 1963, and later worked at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion (USD).

In the mid-1970s she left USD for Washington DC to join the Congressional staff of South Dakota Senator Larry Pressler, with whom she worked for about 20 years.

Although Markie returned to South Dakota several times over the next 47 years to see family and friends, her permanent home was in DC, near Capitol Hill. Her favorite pastime that she cherished most was interacting with the local people. Markie, known locally in the Capitol Hill area as Mother Markie (often responding "Bite me"), is deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Markie was preceded in death by her parents Chuck and Faye Peterson. She's survived by her sister Linda Goodell, brothers Charley, Michael, and Billy, along with four nephews/nieces, five grand nephews/nieces, and ex husband Malcom Lydon.

I grew up with Markie attending the same schools from grade school through high school! Our farms were just across the field from each other! Markie was always so much fun to be with and I enjoyed slumber parties at her house, where the Peterson family treated me like family! One memory is when the Peterson kiddos would come to the Nelson farm and we would go upstairs in the barn and swing from ropes and jump into the hay bales below! I love the photo of Markie as a kid because that is how I remember her! RIP Markie!

I met Markie somewhere sometime on the Hill and interacted with forever. Being a "regular " at the Tune Inn, especially for breakfast after retirement, I saw her frequently for years. Always pithy, she was warm in her own way. She will be missed!

I met Markie in 1995 at the American Legion, where she ran things. She took me under her wing. Really enjoyed our trips out to Charles Town, WV casino, where she was a regular (on the nickel slots.) Wonderful memories and great times.....I will always remember the expression on her face when I gave her a Ted Williams autographed baseball, for her birthday, years ago. SHe loved Teddy Baseball and her SOX....

My Dad took me to Washington DC around 1993 or 1994. Aunt Markie took me on a tour of the capital. Showed me the marble bath tubs in the underground area. Then she introduced me to Baseball Bill and I learned of the legendary spaghetti that stuck to the wall of the bar for a week.

One of my first to mind memories was running together, in the dark, near her home. I ran into a barbed-wire fence, which set us off into a real laughing fit! It had cut my leg but being with Markie, of course, we laughed!
She had such a wonderful sense of humor! I always loved being with her when we were kids! Sadly, we didn't see each other much as adults. She will always be there in our memories.
