MARTIN CUMMINGS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 1, 2011.
10/17/26-03/29/11 We lost a grand Irishman on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Martin was the youngest of five, born and raised in Ornmore, Co. Galway, Ireland. He arrived in the United States in 1949. He met his one true love, Mary Jeannette Cummings in 1951. They were married in 1954, and had seven lovely children that they cherished always: Margie Steinhauser, Edward Cummings, Brian Cummings, Jeannie Cummings, Kevin Cummings, Patty Darvishi and Sean Cummings. They made their home in Visitation Parish and their house was always the place to be, where a warm welcome could be found. Martin worked as a master tile setter and small business owner for the past 30 years. He believed in the gentlemen's handshake and the honor of his word. His work ethic was beyond compare, often working two and three jobs at a time. Martin lived his life fully with joy and compassion. He knew no strangers and welcomed every familiar face and lonely stray into his home. He was a devout Catholic whose faith never wavered. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. And while he loved his homeland and heritage sincerely, he was intensely proud of his citizenship in the United States. He is preceded in death by his beloved Jane, his great grandchildren, Francis Martin Noblitt and Ava Marie Noblitt, as well as his two older brothers, Michael and Jimmy and older sister, Brigid. He leaves behind his sister, Maureen Lawless, seven children, twenty grandchildren, five great grandchildren, six sons and daughters-in-laws, many nieces, nephews, and countless friends. His contagious smile and laughter, the lilt to his speech and beautiful voice will be greatly missed. We will always listen to "Galway Bay" and think of him with adoration. To say we loved him is somehow not descriptive enough. To say he will be sorely missed is also not descriptive enough of the holes left in our hearts. Nothing is difficult to the Brave and Faithful. Rest in Peace dear, beloved Martin. Godspeed to Heaven. Visitation will take place Saturday, April 2, 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The Funeral Mass to follow immediately. Visitation Catholic Church, 5141 Main Street, Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Benedictine Abbey or Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, KS. 1020 N. 2nd, Atchison, KS 66002. To the Cummings family. Belated condolences on the death of your Dad. I only spoke with him once, many years ago, and he was most gracious in explaining how he came to be in Kansas city and what he remembered of Ireland. Now that i'm retired and just picked up my genealogy stuff again, I regret not having taken the time to contact him again and maybe even visit the family. Apparently he was very well loved and will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.

Dear Martin, my father-in-law, you know what you meant to me. It's shockingly been a year since your passing. I had you longer than my own father. I'll never forget how you embraced me, held me through my losses and were the father for me at the tender age of 20. I miss you so much!! Your Grandsons are all wonderful, strong, kind men and all of your granddaughters are beautiful, strong, brilliant women. We all love and miss you, kind gentleman.

Dear Martin,
I will always regret that I never had the chance to meet you. It makes me happy, though, that my husband, Anthony, and my beloved daughter, Tierney, were able to spend some time with you in Kingwood back in 2006. You charmed them completely and you, along with the entire Darvishi family, provided them with much friendship and support during a very difficult time after moving to a new town. I know your family is gathering to honor your memory this week on the year anniversary of your passing. As for myself, I'm still smiling at the funny and warm memories of you that Patty shared with us this past weekend. You are remembered with great love and respect. I pray that your family is able to concentrate on all the great memories of their time with you as well as a life well-lived. Although you are deeply missed, surely they will also be celebrating the joyous life you are now living in Heaven with Jane, Francis, and Ava.
Sincerely,
Sheryl Becan

My belated condolences on the passing of your dad. Was able to say a quick hellow to him at Vis the Sunday before he passed. He was a great help to me on my Irish book. A good, solid man. I felt fortunate to know him.

To all of the beloved Cummings!
We are so, so sorry to hear of the loss of such a wonderful and loving man. Concord Street was the envy of everyone from 51st Street all the way to 55th and Main (and beyond) because of all of the great families that lived there. And Martin Cummings was the epitome of everything good from the "old neighborhood." We are thinking of you today. ~Bonnie Kellerman (and all of the Kellermans)

My own father passed when I had just turned 21. Martin held me for (at least) two hours and just let me cry. He was always there for me and treated me as one of his own. I LOVED hearing him talk and could listen to him sing Galway Bay over and over again. I loved making him laugh. I will always love you, Martin!

Loosing such a generous and lovely man is this worlds great loss but heavens great joy. I'm sure Jane was waiting with open arms to welcome her wonderful husband into a beautiful place. Our hearts will ache for a long time but knowing we will see him again one day will give us some comfort. Smile down on your children Martin and Jane as they will be smiling when they think of you.
