Martin E. Lind, Jr., Major General, U.S. Army (Retired), passed away peacefully at the Hospice of Halifax, Port Orange, Florida, on Friday, June 22, 2018 at the age of 86.
Originally, from Auburn, New York, General Lind served 38 years in the military spanning from his commissioning in 1953, followed by service with the 82nd Airborne Division in Korea, and culminating as the Commanding General of the 42nd Infantry Division, New York Army National Guard. General Lind graduated from Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, NY, with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in 1953. His military education includes the Officer Basic Course, Jump Master Course, Infantry Officer Advanced Course, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the Army War College Correspondence Course, and the National Defense University, Reserve Components National Security Course.
Following his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant, General Lind served as Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Battalion Operations Officer with the 82nd Airborne Signal Battalion, Korea, from 1953 to 1956. Upon release from active duty, General Lind served with the U.S. Army Reserve for two years and then transferred to the New York Army National Guard (NYARNG), serving with the 108th Armored Infantry Battalion, 27th Armored Division, in Auburn, New York as a full time Federal Technician. Subsequently, General Lind served as the Commanding General of the 42nd Infantry Division and as the Superintendent of the Empire State Military Academy. Major General Lind retired in July 1991, with the title of Deputy Adjutant General and Deputy Commander, NYARNG. General Lind's military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal.
Martin is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Joyce (Tolley) Lind, to whom he was lovingly married for 60 years. Joyce cared for Martin for the past few years as a devoted and caring wife to her husband as his health failed. Both Martin and Joyce loved to play golf and enjoyed many friendships from their home in Spruce Creek, FL, and summer home in Fourth Lake, NY. They enjoyed travelling, boating, reading, and spending time with family. In addition to his loving wife Joyce, Martin is survived by his sister Joyce Gaines (husband Dan) of Asheville, NC, three sons, Roger Lind (wife Margy), Ronald Lind (wife Kathy), and Scott Lind (wife Denise), six grandchildren, Taylor Lind Mitchell, Roger Lind, Connor Lind, Alec Lind, Stephanie Lind, and Nicole Lind, and their great-grandchild, Maggie Mitchell.
