Martin Mathis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 15, 2025.
Martin "Marty" Miles Mathis peacefully set off on his next great expedition on April 12, 2025, surrounded by love.

Born under the California sun on March 15, 1957, in Yuba City, Marty grew up in Manteca, where the roots of his story began. It was there he met Sara, the love of his life, at Manteca High School. They celebrated his 18th birthday together in a white AMC Matador, and from that moment on, their souls were entwined. For the next 50 years, they built a life rich in love, laughter, family, and shared dreams.

Marty often said, "If you love what you do, you'll never work a day." As a teenager, he worked for his father-in-law at Cabral Western Motors, but everything changed when he took a river trip with his dad, Art. The Canyon spoke to him, and the water cast its spell. From that moment forward, the river called him home.

In 1986, Marty and Sara followed that call to Utah with their one-year-old daughter, Allison, and began building a life shaped by wild places and bold dreams. His best buddy, Adam, joined the crew four years later, and the grand expedition grew.

Marty had the heart of an artist and the spirit of a storyteller. He doodled on everything, strummed his guitar, turned trash into treasure, and created beauty wherever he went. His yard and home were his sanctuary, and he and Sara turned it into a paradise. After a long day of yard work, they would celebrate with a "gloat walk" and a cocktail in hand.

After a series of fortunate events, Marty bought Grand Canyon Expeditions with Don Saunders and Michael Denoyer. Over the next 40+ years, he created the work environment of his dreams through vision, grit, and an unshakable belief in people. His crew wasn't just a team; they were a family bound by respect, river stories, and shared sunrises.

With a magnetic charm and a laugh that echoed, Marty made friends wherever he went-on riverbanks, elevators, and grocery store aisles. He loved deeply and freely, never shying from a heartfelt "I love you" or a bear hug.

He lived fully, loved wildly, and left this world better than he found it.

Marty is survived by his soulmate, Sara Jane Mathis; his beloved children, Allison (Chase) Carlin and Adam Mathis; his adored grandchildren, Miles, and Claire Carlin; his siblings, Charm Mathis and Randy Mathis; and family and friends who are like family. Marty touched so many people.

The river runs on, but it will always carry echoes of Marty-his laughter in the rapids, his stories in the canyon walls, and his spirit in every bend.

Big water and blue skies, Pa.

We will love you always and miss you forever.

Marty was a great non-boss boss. Wanted everyone to enjoy themselves whether getting the job done or enjoying their vacation. Will miss that laugh in the warehouse.

Our family ( Ken Peterson and his 3 girls) had the pleasure of floating with Marty, and his dad, on I believe his daughter´s first trip! We went in 1993 and had so much fun we went again in 1995. Marty was something else. A man that touched so many people simply by being himself. This man definately lived his "dash" well. Gone way too soon. Our hearts goes out to his family. Till we meet again... RIP Marty

I had the priviledge of going downriver with Marty when I swamped for Bob Dye, and all the comments about him being a great storyteller are true. What I am even more grateful for was his "It takes a village to raise a child" philosophy. His son Adam and my son Forrest took art lessons from Candace Sweet one day a week, after school. One art day, I didn't realize that school got out early, and Forrest went to Candace's house two hours early, with no Candace there. Apparently, Adam did the same, but Marty realized the situation right away, and went to collect Adam. When he saw Forrest there, at a loss as to what to do, kindhearted Marty took both boys out for a hamburger, making a joyous situation out of something that could have been traumatic for my eight-year-old. Marty shrugged it off as if it was nothing, but his actions made me realize how lucky I was to live in a town where people look after each other. Condolences on the loss of a great man.

By Marty. You were my idol. And I will continue to do my best to be more like you every day. You were a genuinely kind person. One of the most likable people to ever live in this world. I will see you again someday. Love you forever. Your cousin Matt

I met Marty in 1981 through a friend who had done a trip with Marty in 1980. In my lifetime I have been influenced by many people who left big marks on my life. One of them was Marty and Sara and the Colorado River also. When all was said and done, I made 11 trips as a swamper with Marty. I will always remember Marty and I will never forget my Colorado River experiences with Marty (and Sarah too for a trip)

Marty was so wonderful to all of his river guides, family. He was always accepting and I always felt a home away from home around him. I sincerely am sorry for this loss and will miss him. I send his family all my love. Ani

I am heartbroken to hear this. Marty was the first person to make me feel welcome as the new girl at Manteca High School. He knew I was having a tough time and made sure he introduced me to some girls who became my great friends. Marty was kind, compassionate and a friend I will never forget. This one hits hard.

We were stunned and deeply saddened to hear of Marty`s passing. He was always larger than life. His fun-loving spirit, compassion for others, an incredible sense of humor will always be remembered. His sense of adventure was second to none. We are kicking ourselves as we think of the river rafting trip we intended to take with Marty, but procrastination got the better of us. Marty lived in the moment. That is a life lesson for all of us. Bon voyage, Marty Mathis. The river will miss you.

I met Marty in early 70´s as a neighbor to my later, in-laws. (or Math is what my bf and later husband, referred to him, as they were Math and Hask to each other and some of the neighborhood kids)
He always had a smile and enjoyed making laughter with all that knew him. This was quite the shock to me to hear about his passing. Charm, Randy, Sara and family, deepest condolences from the Haskins family. There´s only us daughter in laws, our girls and my grandkids left, as our husbands and their parents have all passed on too. Love and Hugs for you all as well as our prayers.

I'm deeply saddened to hear about Marty's passing via his sweet wife Sara.
My heartfelt condolences to Sara, Allison and Adam, and all of his family, including the family at Grand Canyon Expeditions.
I remember Marty as a steadfast soul, whose legacy was deeply tied to his devotion as a husband, father, mentor and river runner.
The Grand Canyon brings out a magic in people, it's calling powerful to all those who experience its depth, beauty and timeless presence on our earth.
No doubt Marty's soul is part Grand Canyon, and will dwell between those walls in eternity, ever close to his sweetheart Sara.
May the River Gods watch over him, bearing witness to all who dare love the river running through those majestic walls.
Rest easy Marty

Marty, you found the most fun thing in life and then spent your days sharing it with one and all. Nothing could better illustrate the amazingly kind and generous spirit you were. We are forever grateful to you for providing us the gift of such magical and thrilling adventures together. Sarah, our hearts ache for you and your family. There's no way to fill that hole, but you have a lifetime and then some of hilarious memories that no doubt will keep you warm and give you smiles for the rest of time. Marty: what a life you led! I have no doubt the fun carries on for you...I'm guessing it looks something like this: head back, feet up and enjoy the ride....

We've known Marty since the late '70s/early '80s, working for the same Grand Canyon river company, when he came on the river with his father Art. We had so much fun with Marty, and then his lovely wife Sara. So many fond memories. Remember all the good times and love.

My heart aches to hear about Marty's passing. He truly had a gift for lighting up any room he entered, and those holiday gatherings in Park City won't be the same without his wonderful presence. I'll always cherish the memories of sharing stories and laughter with him and Sara - his ability to bring joy and warmth to every conversation was something special.

While words feel inadequate at a time like this, please know that you and Sara are in my thoughts. Marty's vibrant spirit and the happiness he brought to others will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

With deepest sympathy,
