Martin McLean Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2005.
Martin T. "Mac" McLean, Jr. Martin T. "Mac" McLean, Jr., 81, of Kerrville, passed away on December 25, 2005, at a local hospital. He was born on September 27, 1924, in Lampasas, Texas, to Martin T. McLean and Ardelia Everett McLean. Mac attended Lampasas public schools and graduated from Lampasas High School in 1942. During World War II he served as Yeoman 3rd Class USNR on Russell, Treasury, and Green Islands during the Bouganville Campaign in the South Pacific. After WWII he attended Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin, receiving a Master of Education degree from UT. Mac worked as an educator in the Austin ISD Outdoor Education and Environmental Education Programs, retiring as Supervisor of Environmental Education in 1979. Known by Austin school children as "Uncle Mac," he and his teaching partner "Uncle Doug" took thousands of Austin elementary school students on environmental education field trips around the Austin area and to retreats at Friday Mountain Boys' Camp. He met Dorothy Nan Harrison Ponton when she asked for his help developing the Austin Nature Center. They were married on January 11, 1963. In Mac's words, he "married Dorothy Nan and her three loving children in 1963 and lived happily ever after mostly." After retiring in 1979 Mac and Dorothy moved to Kerrville, where Mac enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies, including hunting, fishing, gardening, and genealogy. Dorothy Nan preceded him in death on June 16, 2005, as did stepson, Richard Ponton, in 2000. He is survived by two stepchildren, Antoinette "Toni" Morris, and her husband, Dr. William E. Morris, Jr., of Kerrville, and Bruce Ponton, and his wife, Christy, of Austin; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Morris, Melissa Morris, David Ponton, Michael Ponton, Mark Ponton, Richard Ponton, Jr., and Dr. Dorothy Ponton; five great-grandchildren; and many cousins. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, FM 2340, near Lake Victor, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital Foundation-Building Fund, 710 Water Street, Kerrville, TX 78028. The family invites you to send condolences at: www.grimesfuneralchapels.com by selecting the "Send Condolences" link. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.

I have so many good memories of elementary field trips with "Uncle Mac" and "Uncle Doug" - finding arrowheads, eating a wild turnip, walking through Mansfield Dam. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
