Marvin Becker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 1 to Apr. 2, 2023.
Becker , Marvin "Bevo", - 86, of Boca Raton, Florida passed away of natural causes on March 30, 2023. Born in Atlantic City on August 17, 1936, Marvin was a New Jersey resident for most of his life. He attended Atlantic City High School and it was there that he fell in love with playing basketball. He went on to attend Pennsylvania Military College and received the National Rebound Record from the school. The highlight of Marvin's basketball career was when he played for the Washington Generals, the rivals of the famous Harlem Globetrotters. His tenure with the Washington Generals took him across the world where he met various celebrities and politicians. When Marvin moved back to New Jersey, he met Millie, the love of his life. Marvin and Millie were married on February 10, 1962. Their marriage lasted 61 years and was filled with love, laughter, and fulfillment. They raised two daughters, Carrie and Annie, who they adored. Marvin, along with Millie and Carrie, owned and operated an interior design business in New Jersey called Finishing Touch. Eventually, Marvin and Millie moved to Boca Raton to enjoy the beautiful Florida sunshine. Marvin made friends with anyone he talked to and everywhere he went. His laughter, smile, and imposing frame made him a gentle giant. He loved playing golf with his friends at the Atlantic City Country Club, having a Vodka with extra blue cheese olives, smoking a good cigar, and telling dirty jokes. Marvin was an excellent storyteller and loved to tell his grandchildren about his adventures. Marvin is survived by his loving wife Millie, daughter Carrie, and grandchildren Alex (Amber), and Stephen. He was preceded in death by his daughter Annie. He is also survived by his brother Michael (Mary), sister Lois Cramer (David), and more friends and family than could ever be listed. A celebration of Marvin's life will be held this summer in New Jersey. Donations in memory of Marvin can be made to Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund, P.O. Box 3265, Margate, NJ 08402.

Marv "schooled me" on how to play the center position in basketball. He was invited by my Holy Spirit High School freshman Coach Allen "Boo" Pergament to the Jewish Community Center in Margate in 1960. Marv knocked be around "In the Paint" and then shook my hand, smiled and gave me a kind word of encouragement. I took to heart everything he taught me in that one brief encounter with a Very Good Big Man.

I read Mr Becker´s obituary. He must have been a delightful man. In his honor I ordered a jar of the blue cheese stuffed olives to enjoy in vodka. I spent much of my youth in AC and moved to Texas fifty years ago.

Our heart full condolences to Millie and family. The years have moved too quickly but the memories will be forever. We know our mom and dad would have been saddened with the news of his passing. However, he is now shooting hoops with dad and having fun conversation with mom. Our family and yours have traveled a long history and we are so happy to have shared in those memories.

I knew Marvin from when he worked at his family's store, in the 900 block Atlantic Av., in the 1940's and I lived in the 800 Block. His imposing physique, definitely caused him to stand out. Then, in the early 1950's, we worked together on the Steel Pier. All fond memories, of an all around good guy. Rest easy Bevo. Steve Souder, Kent Island, MD

In 1965, my parents, Ethel and Milton Ackerman (z'l) moved our family...my older brother (Rick), my sister (Linda) and me ... to 8807 Atlantic Avenue, directly across the street from where you guys lived.
On my very first morning in our new home and neighborhood I was walking up to the beach bulkhead on Sumner when Marv saw me, said "hello" and introduced himself and then went on to introduce the rest of the family.
I will always remember the infectious warmth and good humor that were so much a part of him. I see his face in my mind's eye and although it is a face about 50 years younger that I see there, what I really see, looking back way, was his humanity...his essential goodness and his way of making one feel good just to see him smile!

My heart goes out to you all.
