Marvin Newman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2024.
Marvin Allen Newman passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024 in Fresno California at the age of 81. Marvin grew up in Selma California where he graduated from Selma High School in 1959. He played basketball and football and met the love of his life, Florence.

Marvin and Florence got married on November 27, 1959 and had two children, Rick & Cindy.

Shortly after graduating from High School Marvin went to work for Dow Chemical where he worked for over 30 years. He did just about every job in the plant and worked his way up to management and was able to retire at the young age of 52. Along with playing basketball and football in High School Marvin played men's softball and was an avid golfer. He joined Copper River Country Club when it opened in 1995.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife Florence, his brother Bob, his sisters Sally and Lola. He is survived by his son Rick and wife Marsi, daughter Cindy and husband Carter, and grandson Marc.

Marvin was a loving and caring man who was a big fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Rams. He watched every game he could on TV and was able to attend a Rams game at the new LA stadium.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Marvin's Favorite place to eat, Sal's Mexican Restaurant (7476 North Fresno St, Fresno CA 93720) on Friday, February 2nd from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. We invite family and friends to have lunch and share their special memories.

Marvin resided at my place of employment. He was a very sweet and funny man. The first time I met him I was coming to his room, and I saw his Dodger plaque hanging on the outside of his door. I thought, i´m gonna like this guy, and I did. There wasn´t a time that I went in his room that we didn´t talk about our beloved Dodgers. Maybe 2024 will be our year. Miss you, Marvin!

I shared lots of experiences with Marvin. What I remember most is all the golf trips we took. Both he and I were avid golfers when we were younger. On one company golf trip at the coast we were at one of the nice courses there and we were both pretty young. At this one hole Marvin teed off and then I teed off. When we got to our balls I was hitting first and had to draw the ball around a tree. I took my shot and did just that and the ball landed about 15 feet from the hole. I turned and looked a Marvin and said top that Newman! He said okay. Now he was in a worse position than I was and I said now just what are you going to do with these tree limbs blocking your shot to the green, lol. He said you see that opening? I looked up and saw an opening in the foliage about 6 feet by 4 feet in an oval shape. He said I´m going right through that! I said yeah right have at it! I´ll be danged if he didn´t put it through that opening and landed on the green about 10 feet from the hole! I said Newman you´re amazing but you still have to make the putt! lol. I´ll never forget that memory of Marvin calling his shot but I think it was mostly luck

What a good friend he was. When I lived in Washington and was battling cancer, Marvin always stayed in touch with me. He called at least once a week. During that time in my life I sure needed his friendship. When I got better I would come see him and sometimes stay and visit. Then I would go back for more treatments. He helped me a lot through that tough time. He was a true friend..

There were many times I laughed with Marvin through the years. He had a great personality! If you knew Marvin there were not very many dull moments with him. Even when he was ill he kept his spirits up.

I have lots of memories about Marvin. I guess the memory that really impressed me was his devotion to his beloved wife Florence and the his love for his two children Rick and Cindy. Also what a good husband and father he was.

My first memory was meeting Marvin for the first time. He worked on the converting side of the plant and I was working in the Films production side of the Plant. One day I saw Marvin coming from the converting side on his way to the office area. On his way he stopped and talked to some of the guys. Back then there was a lot of joking between employees and I noticed Marvin was very quick witted with the joking going on. He was heading my way and stopped and said hi and I introduced myself, shook hands and were good friends ever since. He later became my Supervisor.
