Mary and the Hurley family are from my childhood days at The Bay. I have many wonderful memories but one special day comes to mind when I think of Mary. I had not tie my little boat up properly and it started to drift out into The Bay. Mary is five years older than me and so she swam out into The Bay to get my little boat. In my child's mind it seems she swan out so far and brought my little boat back to me. That day she was my hero. Sorry to read of your passing.

I met Mary birding with Bruce DiLabio's Saturday group. She shared her knowledge about birds and helped identify birds. She was a great travel companion on birding trips and the group missed her when she was absent. Mary had tremendous depth of inner life besides birding..a pleasure to have known her. Louise

I met Mary when she became lead analyst to the Senate Aboriginal Peoples Committee. She was a moral compass on these and so many other issues, and I admired her tremendously. We remained friends for almost 20 years and I, like so many others, will feel the loss terribly.

Mary was a woman of integrity, honesty and passion. The world is a lesser place without her.

Mary was a major component of our video team at McGill back in 1972. She acted as a coordinator for our project recording the interactions of health care practitioners and their patients. I remember her as a highly competent nurse with a great deal of compassion for the patients with whom we worked. It was a pleasure and a privelege to work with her.

I am a dogwalker with the Ottawa Humane Society, and knew Mary for 15 years, with the dogwalking program, when the Humane Society was on Champagne St. I will always remember how Mary was so very dedicated, caring, and always an advocate for the welfare, and needs of the dogs. When the shelter moved to Hunt Club, Mary continued with the dogwalking program with the same passion, and loyalty, and compassion for the dogs. You are greatly missed, and always will be. Thank you Mary. My deepest condolences to Mary's family, and friends.

I noticed that my first entry was written with spelling, and grammatical errors, perhaps being due to being upset at the loss of Mary. Mary was a vital component of our little group of dedicated dog walkers, and with her absence,we feel her loss deeply. Mary was an advocate for the dogs, to ensure their needs were meet. I will always remember Mary as a fit, slim, tall lady, who had a warm smile and gentle face. I visited Mary in palliative care on August 11. We looked at some pictures of Gypsy together. A favourite dog of both of us from 2010. I will always think of Mary, especially when at the ohs. I am glad to have know you Mary.

There you are, Mary, in my mind's eye, your dark elegant hair piled high off your starched white collar, your posture regal and assessing... I don't recall that we ever spoke. But there you are. Fondly,
Jo Yuill Darlington, MGH Nursing School, Class of '71.

News is spreading among the classmates from Mary's MGH Nursing class of 1971. Thoughts of Mary as the brilliant, reflective and mature young woman dominate my personal memories, Deepest condolences to Mary's family - to Katie, her sister whom I remember with fondness. Respectfully, Mary Vitagliano Dobie (Class of '71)

I worked with Mary as Dog Walker volunteer at the Ottawa Humane Society, starting in Sept 2005, at Champagne St location, and then continuing with our move to the our shelter in June 2011. Mary has advocated for the dogs, and was there voice to ensure their needs were meet. I remember Mary has always being active and fit, with a gentle face, and warmth that she seemed to give off. I visited Mary on August 18, at Elizabeth Bruyure, and we shared looking at some pictures of Gypsy together, a favorite dog of both of us from Champagne. Mary was a vital component of little group of veteran dog walkers from Champagne and our new location. When Mary was no longer able to continue with us, her presence was always missed, and her absence now, is felt even more.

I am so deeply saddened by this news. I had the privilege of working with Mary when she clerked at the Federal Court. She was an amazing woman, dedicated, insightful and above all, honourable. I have wonderful memories of our discussions on legal issues. My thoughts are with you and your family Mary.

I am very thankful for our coffee and dog visits over the years, and will cherish them all. Starbuck, Cisco and Rosa were always so excited to see you. You were very special to us! I'll never forget the day we picked up Rosa at the OHS and you were there for the big send off, and made sure that she came home with her favorite blue ball.
We will miss you dearly Mary. RIP my friend.
