Hi. I wrote this for Mary: My Cousin Mary Special in More than One Way My first-cousin Mary is special in more than one way. You see, she was born with Down Syndrome nearly 65 years ago in a time in history that was unforgiving to those with this ability. Yes, I say ability. Unlike worldly ways, Mary did not care if you were rich or poor, flawed or blessed. She loved and unabashedly accepted everyone. Funny, thoughtful, and kind, Mary was a courageous pioneer. Her life expectancy was 20. And if she were born to different parents, Mary may have been institutionalized as a baby and relegated to nearly nothingness. But my Auntie Jo would have nothing of that. For Mary was Auntie Jo and Uncle Franks (a World War II veteran) first of four children. And through Mary, Auntie Jo found her real strength, as she staunchly advocated to have Mary, and others like her, educated in public schools, placed in the workforce, and able to live a fulfilling life beyond 20. As a little girl, I spent nearly every Sunday of my childhood visiting and hanging out with Mary and other treasured cousins, Pat, Fran, and Dan, at Auntie Jo and Uncle Franks housea 15-minute commute across the river from Bismarck to Mandan, North Dakota. What I didnt know then was the life lessons I was learningto be a voice for the voiceless, strong in the face of odds, and understanding of those who are different than me. Mary, I know you are joining our other loved ones beyond this world, but I want you to know how very special you will always be to me here on earth. Until we meet again, thank you for being special in more than one way. Love, Cousin Clarice
