Mary Jane Nicholson

Mary Jane Sebey Nicholson, a proud Minnesotan with strong Norwegian roots, passed away on October 29, 2023, at the age of 85, just a day before her 86th birthday. Born on October 30, 1937, in Granite Falls, Minnesota, to the late Prescott and Magdalene (Holland) Sebey, she grew up in Echo, Minnesota, before moving to Lombard, Illinois.

Mary was the cherished wife of the late John James Nicholson and a loving mother to Natalia Nicholson and Scott Nicholson, who is married to Alice. She adored her grandchildren, Sarah Jane, John Paul, and Prescott, and was a source of warmth and kindness to her entire family. Mary was also a dear sister to Paul Sebey (Lillian, deceased) and the late John Sebey (Marjorie), and a doting aunt to numerous nieces, nephews, and fond cousins.

Having studied at Saint Olaf College, Mary's journey took her to New York City, where she worked for Capital Airlines and met her beloved husband. Later, she relocated to the Chicago area, where she became an integral part of the community. She was known for her joyful spirit and her commitment to her faith, as a long-standing member of the Lombard Faith United Methodist Church and a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL.

Mary had a passion for exploring the world and cherished spending time at her family's cottage at Nest Lake, Minnesota. Her dedication to her family was unwavering, and she found immense joy in the company of her family, friends, "sisters" and grandchildren. Her compassionate nature and infectious smile will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A private family service will be held for Mary at The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL, where she will be interred beside her husband John, a veteran. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to American Cancer Society.
