Mary Elizabeth Serena, 86, a resident of Spring Brook Twp. since 1972, died Thursday morning in Scranton Health Care Center. Her husband of 59 years was Joseph R. Serena Sr., who died Sept. 1, 2008.

Born in Moosic, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Williams Van Luvender. A graduate of Butler High School, she was employed in the office of Butler Rubber Mill, Butler, N.J. She was a member of Spring Brook Congregational Church.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved family reunions and holiday gatherings. She enjoyed gardening and cooking. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph R. Serena Jr. and wife, Tanya, Honesdale; and Rodney Serena and wife, Rosemary, Spring Brook Twp.; a sister, Marge Caffrey, Newton, N.J.; six grandchildren, Renee Dunn; Stephanie, Tamara, Kellashondra, Kevin and Allan Serena; three great-grandchildren, Malori, Wyatt and Jacob; several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Merton and Chuck Gallagher.

The funeral will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Home, 3 First St., Spring Brook Twp., with Deacon John Franceschelli officiating. Interment, Marcy Cemetery, Duryea. Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Spring Brook Fire Company, 20 State Route 690, Spring Brook Twp., PA 18444; or Spring Brook Congregational Church, 209 Beech Road, Spring Brook Twp., PA 18444.
