Matthew Furry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 29 to May 30, 2018.
Matthew William Furry (Matt), a Managing Director of Fixed Income Trading at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. Resident of Norcross, Ga. The man. The myth. The legend, died unexpectedly at the age of 52, May 26th, 2018 at 8:34 AM.

The world will never quite be the same after this day.

Matt was born July 23rd 1965 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Bill and Mary Lou Furry. He graduated from the University of North Texas where he played collegiate soccer. Subsequently he earned a Chartered Financial Analyst certification.

He married Deanna "Reba" Mendoza on October 6, 1990 and through her tenacious spirit survived his loving banter and sarcasm for 27 years. Also surviving their father are his two sons Preston and Brendan. Through their father's unique blend of love, nurturing and unbridled wit they have emerged as fine young men. Men that he was amazingly proud of in so many ways.

In addition to his wife and sons, Matt is survived by his father and mother, Bill Furry and Mary Lou Furry; sister, Sue Stone and her three children, Justin, Chad and Shane Cone; In laws Al & Rebecca Mendoza; Brother in laws & spouses, Greg & Monica Mendoza, Chris & Sarina Mendoza, Mario Mendoza & fiance Kelly Hoggard; Nieces, Briana & Alexa Mendoza; Nephews,

Greg-Anthony, Jeremy, Timothy, Mario Jr., Max & Jaden Mendoza

Jack & Will Hoggard.

Who was Matt Furry? A wonderful father, a good husband, a friend, grill master, athlete, coach, remarkably intelligent, pontificator, author, frugal, wise, selfless servant, conspiracy theorist, comedian, beer enthusiasts, mentor and overall one of the best human beings we have ever had the fortune to meet!

Funeral arrangements have been made through Crowell Brothers Funeral Homes & Crematory. Visitation will take place between 5 and 7pm, Thursday May 31st 2018 at Saint Brigid Catholic Church, 3400 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek, GA 30022. A rosary service will follow the visitation at 7pm.

There will be a memorial mass to celebrate Matt's selfless life at Saint Brigid Catholic Church Friday June 1, 2018 at 11am. With a reception to follow in Corbett hall.

As an expression of sympathy, the family suggest sending memorial contributions in Matt's name to the Marist School (Reachforexcellence.org) or to the Non-profit, Bright Futures of Atlanta.

Matt would have wanted for his wife, boys, family and friends to celebrate his mission here, which has now been completed.

Well wishers are encouraged to write a note of farewell on a beer can of choice and drink it in his honor.

Due to void that Matt has left, the world is less. However, his legacy will live on forever! We love you buddy! Hook 'em horns!

On-line condolences may be made at www.crowellbrothers.com. Arrangements by Crowell Brothers Funeral Homes & Crematory, 5051 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092. 770-448-5757.

I went to high school with Matt, and had the great fortune to play soccer with him for two years. He was a great goal keeper, teammate and classmate who I always admired and respected. I was sorry to learn of his passing, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family.

I just found out about Matt's passing today and it took me by surprise. I worked with Matt for 3 years at SunTrust and he was not only a boss, but also a friend and advisor to me. Matt was genuinely funny, as he could find humor in just about any situation. I also had the pleasure of meeting his family on a few occasions and you could tell they loved him very much, and he, them. He showed me the kindness of inviting me to his home and cooking what was probably the best meat I have ever had. Matt was an amazing person with a brilliant mind and personality. He left us too soon and will be dearly missed.

To Matt's Family -
I had the pleasure of sharing a position with Matt on the Grey Bears. He was one of the best of us. Because he seldom "signed up" online, I always found myself hoping he would come striding to the sideline. He rarely let us down. He was good on the field, but he was also one of the best in bar afterwards - a great guy who was down with a joke or a serious conversation. By far, though, his favorite topic was his boys and their accomplishments. We will all miss him and will be thinking of you guys, who he clearly loved so much.

Hey Matt, we honored you last night before our soccer game with prayer and a minute of silence. Seemed like an eternity, standing there at midfield with the Ref and the other team. It was the early game so it was full sun and pretty hot in the stadium. There was no one at right back to start the game. It was hard to comprehend the vacancy left by you and we were all stunned to look down at the black arm bands and know that they represented our respect for you. We may not have seen you on the sideline, but we felt your presence on the pitch. I knew it was you that set the ball up perfectly for me to get that first goal. It felt like you teeing it up, letting me know that you were watching the match and would always be a part of us. Thanks for being a force of good nature in our lives and on our team for the years you gave us.

We finished in a 4-4 tie. A respectable and honorable result. The league gave us a brand new ball and we all signed it for your family. Well take it to them when the new uniforms come in. Neil ordered them last week. Theyre black and grey Nike shirts with your initials on the sleeve. We got you number 12 just like last time...and youll be the last guy to wear 12 on our team. No one will replace you. After the game we put back a few pitchers of the coldest, freshest Modeli Especial ever served on the planet and toasted and spoke of you, as if you were just gone to the lake this week, fishing or chillin by the grill. Thats how well picture you from now on when we get together on Monday nights to play...Just chillin by the lake, waitin for us to finish up so we can get beers together.

Peace forever brother,
All the Lads from Grey Bears FC

Deanna, Preston, & Brendan,
I am shocked and so very sorry for your loss. My prayers and consoling thoughts are with you, Deanna, and your sons. The last time I saw Matt was at Chad's wedding. That was an incredible day. He was very warm and kind. I will especially miss his humor and his quick wit. It was so impressionable as I recall even now with clarity the hilarity I experienced listening to his descriptions of the perils of day-to-day driving through Atlanta, GA. Matt will be greatly missed. May God hold you, hold you in the palm of His hand.

I've had the pleasure of dealing with Matt as a client since 2002. He always displayed a pleasant demeanor and was ethical to his core. When I first met him, I was surprised by his height. He always sounded "less tall" over the phone. But always, always a gentleman and a great guy. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, his colleagues and the many lives he touched along his journey. May his memory be a blessing.
