Matt was born on July 6, 1972 to Ray and Cindy Sheffield. He was the first grandchild and filled our homes with so much love. I have many wonderful memories and good times that were shared with him. Being that he was my first grandchild I was able to spend a lot of quality time with him. My job allowed me to travel with him and he was treated like a king in the hotels. He absolutely loved room service! He was a very special part of all our lives and was known in the Chino schools as an outstanding athlete like his father. He was assistant coach for a team that won the state championship. He was an excellent football player as well as an excellent coach.
Every member of our family will miss his fun and loving personality.
What a special part of our lives you have been!
Love you, Grandma Jennie

It's been a month since you have passed and my heart hurts everyday. I just can't bring myself to believe you are gone. My first love turned amazing friend who I could always reach out to for support and vice versa. You just aren't supposed to be gone, you have so many people who love and need you. I wish I had one last phone call or visit with you. I will never forget you, and your family will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. I know you will be trying hard up there to force a Bears loss against your Vikings... love you Matty and I will miss you forever.

You were such an amazing guy and always so much fun. From throwing me in the pool at Aunt Cindy's in Chandler over AND over again when I was little, to giving Miguel and I a tour of Vegas a few months ago. I will forever be grateful for getting to spend all the time I did with you this year, on the cruise, and then again in Vegas. Also for Miguel getting the opportunity to meet you and you him, as well as, getting to meet and spend time with Katie and seeing how happy she made you.
You are and will continue to be missed more than you can imagine, by so many, and definitely let your mark on all of our hearts. I am so lucky to of had you as my cousin and have always and will always love you "favorite cousin"!!! RIP Matt xo

Dear Matt,
Memories of you as a very young boy flood our minds today. Playing in the jacuzzi, visiting us on Halloween, Thanksgiving at your family's home...and always, always the infectious laugh. I thank God you never lost that playfulness!
We admired you when you stood so strong paying tribute to your father and were touched when you ask us to visit when you found out we were in Las Vegas. I'm so grateful you reached out and we had that time with you. Now we are made aware that you touched many in the same way. You left people feeling better for having been in your company. Give your Dad a big bear hug from us! You will both be loved and remembered always!

Matt:
"Got you" in a package deal with your Mom and sisters.... No doubt I'm the lucky one in that transaction! We spent as much time together as our schedules would allow - we know now, NOT enough. I was always so impressed on how your Mom and sisters would light-up when you were with them... So easy to see how much you truly meant to them. Always the consummate lady's man I guess.... ;-)
Speaking of the ladies, it's more than clear to me! Your new wife Katie's a GEM - I totally see and support the plan. Sorry we couldn't have had the "we did it BBQ" as planned.
I'll do my best to do whatever I can for, to carry-on with and be a part of your great family (of course including the nieces and nephew) here in Arizona. Please check-in-on-me from time-to-time to make sure I'm making a passing grade.
Via con dios young man.

It's hard to find the words to express the heartache of losing such a loved young man. I remember that laugh and your happy personality every time we were around you. You will be truly missed.

Matt your life was taken away from us too soon and it is hard to understand why things like this happen to such good people. I cannot put into words how much I will miss you. Matt you were and will be a large part of my youth. You were always there for the good, the bad, and everything in between. I couldn't ask for a better friend. You were a gentle giant who wore your heart on your sleeve.
You were and are an incredibly positive person and could laugh in the most dire of situations and would not want us to be sad today. If you were here you would tell us to cheer up, smile and remember all of the great memories we all shared. Even though you may be gone, your memory will live on in all of us forever. Matt, I appreciate your friendship, your overt cockiness and your infectious laugh and look, that you gave that always seemed to make everything seem okay.
I will forever cherish our memories;
~Baseball!,
~late night missions teepeeing houses in my Ford Escort,
~playing numerous games of over the line at Ayala Park which inevitably always ending with one of us (usually you) nailing one of the houses and us scattering like roaches,
~your eagerness to take a role in whatever home video I asked you to do next, whether it was dressing up in full zombie makeup for Night of the Mormons, stepping into the role of a Karate Tri-clops (yes, a triclops who was a karate master) at UCI, or taking a turn as the construction working in the Village people for our senior skit,
YOU were bold my friend!
~Bloody and grotesque flag and tackle football injuries; (I think the games started out as flag football but surely became the latter),
~Freshman year locker room hijinks,
~you and your dad letting me use your address so I could return to Chino high for my senior year,
~being one of my groomsmen for my wedding and supplying everyone in the wedding party with the hard liquor even some who may or may not have been of age,
~your family always having an open door at your home,
~the Brotherhood of Justice Vs. The Regulators bowling challenges,
~your inexplicable phase our sophomore year when you began wearing a beret to school with your pegged jeans, (I sang Razberry Beret every chance I had just to get under your skin. Yes, Matt I didn't let you live it down then and still won't!)
~seeing your shear excitement at being the first one to uncover the Klass mystery,
~Vegas turnaround trips when our parents thought we're staying at one another's house (I like to think that these adventures we took planted the seed for you to move to Vegas to start the next phase of your life and most profound because you found both your career and your beautiful wife Katie.)
I'm so grateful we had the chance back in April for an all-nighter of wonderful conversation, filled with lots of laughter, bad inside jokes, sharing your dad's touching voicemail he left you and reminiscing memories of our youthful selves
Probably most importantly though what I'll remember the most is you always being there to listen and having the biggest damn heart of anyone I know!...
Rest In Peace Matt Sheffield, I love you my friend and brother! I would give anything for one more round of over the line righties vs. lefties...

Matt, You were my brother and friend. We've helped each other we've laughed together and cried together, you have protected me when necessary (a few times) And we have definitely made fun of each other. I am truly thankful for every moment of it and I am very proud to call you my brother. I find peace in knowing your with our Dad, But you will truly be missed... You are and will always be loved..

I feel very fortunate to have been your Aunt. There was no other baby boy that could compare with you. You were perfect and the cutest thing I'd ever seen! The one memory that stands out the most is the way you could walk with your toes curled under. You ran, walked up stairs with no pain. Most people would have broke their toes!
We all love you so much and will definitely feel your absence .
Love you, Aunt Brenda

Matt, My most vivid memory were the times you played tackle football with all of us (Wayne, Shaun, Orlando, Jerry, Joe etc). It seemed every time we played someone always got hurt. The last time we played it was unfortunately your turn. I just remember Orlando showing up to play in metal cleats. We weren't sure that was a good idea. A few minutes later his cleats met your Achilles' tendon and shredded it. I remember it took all of us to lift you over the fence and onto the back of a truck. That was the last time we ever played.
Matt, you were one of the best people I ever met dude. The world is a much lesser place without you in it.

I read this verse today Son, and it made me think of you.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one piece, but to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out, AND defiantly shouting "Whoa Doggie! What a ride!" (Author Unknown)
The kind memories your friends shared with me at Scoundrels last night, looking through the photos and reading the posts from your friends on your Facebook page, I am reminded how full your life was and how much you loved your family and friends. You are gone from all of us way too soon but I find comfort knowing that you definitely enjoyed your ride!
Love you forever, Mom

To my friend Matt - Death will come to all, but great achievements build a monument which shall endure until the sun grows cold Matt I am thankful that our creator of this universe let us share our lives together. May the creator give peace and understanding to your wife and love ones as they travel upon this earth.
