Matthew Stewart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 22, 2025.
"Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while." With true love in our hearts, we announce that Matthew David Stewart, 49, passed away suddenly in his Quincy home on Monday, May 19, 2025. Born June 1, 1975 in Quincy to Mary Elizabeth (Bertrand) Stewart and Grant Raymond Stewart, he grew up in a military family as the oldest son of eight.

All his life, Matt exemplified how to simply be yourself. He had an unshakeable spirit and so much wit. He was sharp and deeply opinionated, from politics to sports to organic chicken. He could make you laugh and angry in the same conversation. He was a cheerleader for his family and friends - whether it was about their career, their charm, or their good looks. He was a forever optimist, a real dreamer. He genuinely enjoyed people and that was felt by all. He was a good friend and a great father. He was a force of life.

Matt intimately understood the power of place. He was the biggest fan of the state of Massachusetts, taking great pride in living in the City of Presidents and in a state known for taking care of its people. He relished equally in the beauty and bonfires of Wellfleet and the joy of a Dunkin' Donuts coffee. One of his favorite things was driving anywhere scenic in the state, with nowhere really to go. His blood ran green for the Celtics, and he achieved his dream of raising three boys who share a deep appreciation for basketball.

Above all, Matt's greatest love was his family - most especially his three boys: Jack, Leo, and Max, who he raised lovingly with his wife, Danielle. He will be profoundly missed by Danielle and his boys, his parents, his seven siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and so many cousins and friends. Nothing made Matt happier than any family affair, most especially a white Christmas. Here's to wishing him a million of those in heaven.

Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Tuesday, May 27, from 3 - 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Parish in Saint Mary's Church, 95 Crescent Street, West Quincy, on Wednesday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, West Quincy.

For those who wish, donations in Matt's memory may be made to the JLM Fund, a scholarship fund for Jack, Leo, and Max (checks can be sent to: Liberty Bay Credit Union, Attn: Amy Horgan, 300 Granite Street, Braintree, MA 02184).
