Matthew Winchell Obituary
Matt began his career in law enforcement with Dekalb County in 2012 as a police officer. During his 8 years as an officer, he received 20 commendations and was recognized as DeKalb County Police Officer of the Year/South Precinct in 2016.
Matt will always be remembered as a loving, compassionate, energetic, courageous and amusing guy who enjoyed life and making others laugh. His affection for sports, music, sport shoes, and tattoos were well known. Matt had a special ability to connect with people and left an impact on us all.
Matt was preceded in death by his grandmother, Clare Winchell, and grandfather, John M. Howley, Jr. He will be dearly missed by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is survived by his partner, Ariel Dozier of Tucker, GA, sons Christiano Matthew Winchell (Courtney Warren), Giovanni Thomas Winchell, daughter Gabriella Ava Winchell and stepson Aden Dozier; his parents, Ann Howley Winchell and Brad Winchell, and sister Elizabeth Winchell Smith (Alexander) of Durham, NC. He is the grandson of Mary Ellen Howley of Atlanta and Charles Winchell of Johns Creek, GA. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Monday, September 25, 2023 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA 30305 with a reception to follow. All are welcome. A livestream of the Mass will be offered for those unable to attend at https://livestream.com/ctk/remembrance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to gofundme.com/f/in-loving-memory-of-matt-winchell.

It is with great sadness to hear about the passing of my former colleague, Matthew Winchell. He had such a great personality, he had a big smile and he was an overall good person. He will truly be missed by so many. My prayers are with his family and close friends.

Although we didn´t know Matt, we have known his grandmother, Mary Ellen, and his mother, Ann, for many, many years and have always loved the Howley family! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in this time of sorrow.

Although I did not know Matthew well, as his neighbor, I remember the first time meeting him. I was chasing after my two barking doxies as usual and he said hello and extended his hand to introduce himself. He had a big smile on his face and we immediately talked about our mutual love for tattoos and how we both use to be DeKalb County Police Officers. His warmth and kindness was infectious and I remember laughing a lot whenever I had the chance to have conversations with him. From our brief chats one could tell how much he loved his family. His infectious smile and bright light will be missed here on Earth, but I know he is on the other side still shining his light brightly on those he held dear.
