Matushka Tatiana Vass, age 53, of Ellicott City, MD, on June 26, 2013, died at home surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Married for 17 years, she was the wife of Reverend Priest John Vass and the mother of two sons, Gregory, 16 and Nicholas, 13. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, she was the daughter of the late Very Reverend Mitred Archpriest Nikolai and Matushka Ludmila Kuzmin. Matushka Tatiana graduated from the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia with a degree in library science and worked for more than 12 years as a librarian in St. Petersburg Theological Academy and Seminary in Russia. For the last 14 years, she held many responsibilities assisting her husband at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in Baltimore, MD. Matushka was active with the parish's St. Catherine Sisterhood caring for the adornment of the church temple; she consistently showed love and concern for the children of the parish, assisting with many projects for the youth; and she held important roles in many parish fundraisers. She was loved by many Orthodox faithful in the Baltimore region for untiring support of the Church and work for the parish. Thanks to her example, many people drew closer to the Orthodox faith. At home, Matushka Tatiana was an avid gardener, great cook and most of all a loving mother to her two sons. Also surviving are two sisters, Ekaterina Kuzmina; Irina Gvozdiy and husband Pavel, nephew Ivan; and brother Herman, all in St. Petersburg; mother-in-law Marie Vass, Clarks Summit, PA; sister-in-law Denise Hall and husband Donald, niece , Emily Hall, Danville, PA She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, John J. Vass Viewing hours will be Friday, June 28 from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, 1723 E. Fairmount Avenue, Baltimore MD 21231 www.holytrinityorthodox.com Panikhida service will be held at 7:30 PM. Also at the church on Saturday June 29 the Divine Liturgy will be served at 9:00 AM followed by the funeral service at approximately 10:30 AM. Interment will be at Holy Trinity Orthodox Cemetery, 6480 Elibank Drive, Elkridge, MD 21075. Flowers may be sent to Marzullo Funeral Chapel, 6009 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD 21214 – Phone: 410-254-5201. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church or toward a college scholarship fund to benefit her two sons, Gregory and Nicholas.
