Maureen S. Jayawardena

Jayawardena, Maureen S. of Newburgh, NY, called to eternal rest on Monday, January 28, 2013 in St. Luke's Hospital, Newburgh. She was 90. Daughter of the late Dr. Merle and Pearl (Guneratne) Perera, she was born August 10, 1922 in Sri Lanka. She was married to the late Dr. Tibi Jayawardena. Maureen was the first Montessori teacher in Sri Lanka and was tutored by Dr. Maria Montessori. She was a loving mother to her children, Irene Ratnayake & her husband Everard of Edina, MN, Dr. Joseph Jayawardena & his wife Meilin of Newburgh, NY and Gihan Jayawardena & his wife Annika of Stockholm, Sweden; loving grandmother to Varinie Nixon & her husband Blake, Adrian Ratnayake & his wife Michelle, Alresch Jayawardena, Amintha Ratnayake and Melik Jayawardena; loving great-grandmother to Elizabeth Nixon, Blake Nixon Jr. and William Nixon; and loving aunt to several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Tibi, her son, Prasad, and sister, Celine Fernando. Mom, we are proud you meant so much to so many. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced.
