Mavis VAUGHAN Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Mar. 8, 2016.
VAUGHAN, Mavis Anne
January 26, 1922 - March 2, 2016
Mavis died peacefully at 94, on the Sunshine Coast,BC. Born to a pioneer family, mom was the only child of renowned sculptor Dudley Carter and Teresa Carter (nee Easthope) of the Easthope Engine clan. Mom spent her childhood years trekking up and down the west coast of North America, as determined by her father's artistic endeavours. From a modest Kerrisdale home, cabin life in Gibsons, to a Haida House in Carmel California, mom was immersed into a lifestyle of creative ingenuity, pioneer practicality, and extended family loyalty (16 aunts and uncles, 40 first cousins).
Meeting David Vaughan on a Gibson's bound steam ship at age 17, married at 22 during the war, mom was soon to be transported into the busy lifestyle as the spouse of an aspiring young lawyer, leading to the birth of 3 children. 46 years of living fully, with David and family, mom travelled, entertained, developed significant relationships within B.C.'s artistic communities, boated, sailed; equally enjoying waterfront cabin life in Gibsons and waterfront living in West Vancouver; ultimately building a uniquely crafted custom home in Gibsons in1978.
With David dying suddenly in 1990, mom was thrust into a new chapter in her long and productive life. She could now develop her own world on her own terms. And what a life she discovered for herself! Now travelling to continents and many countries unexplored during marriage (including 3 trips to the Kingdom of Bhutan featured in her photo); building a new waterfront home; staying current in political and world events; writing newspaper travel articles; developing a personal spirituality; continuing her patronage of the arts; deepening long time friendships and developing new connections; truly assuming the rightful position as matriarch of her family, passing on her wisdom with much love and investment.
And now she is gone. Mom's own memory was spectacular, able to recall events, details, numbers and people, weaving it all into a very personal and cherished fabric of living well. Now it is our turn as her surviving children, Michael, Anna (& Lex), Peter (& Drusilla), and grandchildren, Julia, Cambria (& Will), Laura, and Tulley, to cherish her, weaving each of our many memories into a fabric of deep love and enduring respect which will last our lifetime and beyond.
A celebration of life service will be held at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church in Gibsons, BC, on Saturday March 12th at 2pm.

Dear Mavis, it has been a year since you passed away. Do miss our talks and visits when you were at Holy Family Hospital.
Softly the leaves of memories fall
Gently I gather and treasure them all,
Unseen, Unheard, so loved, so missed, And So Very Dear!

Thinking of You

Although I only met your Mother twice that I can recall, I was kept up with many of her exciting exploits through my Mom (when she was still alive) and my aunt Gladys, cousin Mae and on one occasion, through my youngest daughter who had the honor to meet her when she was doing a project at university. I must say that your Mom had a fascinating and inspiring life and I am sure that you all miss her very much.
Yours sincerely, Eileen Yearwood (my Mom Doris was your Mother's first cousin, being the daughter of Nathan and Irma Carter)

An amazing woman, and family, with whom I've had the pleasure of knowing my entire life. Deeply saddened, but glad a new, easier journey has begun for you Mavis, and Mum will be happy to see you again.
