McAfee B. "Mack" Trammell BRISTOL, Va. McAfee B. "Mack" Trammell, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center from years of frail health and dementia, with his loving wife and caregivers by his side. He was born Oct. 12, 1926, in Chatsworth, Ga., to the late Mack B. and Ora Bell Jones Trammell. He was of the Presbyterian faith. He served his country in the U.S. Army and attended ETSU and graduated from UT with a business degree where he was a member of the SAE fraternity. Mack was a mover and shaker, always with business on his mind. His desire was to make Bristol a great place and he helped Bristol and its people in many ways. He was the first to build apartments, a shopping center, nursing home and sub-divisions in Bristol. He started Trammell Homes in Greeneville, Tenn., building his first hotel and restaurant, King Authors Court and Knights of the Round Table then moved to Bristol where he started Trammell Construction and built the Howard Johnson Hotel, both City Halls for Bristol Tennessee and Virginia, Country Club Crossing Apartments, Marion Plaza Shopping Center, Bristol Country Club, Bristol Nursing Home, YMCA, Euclid Avenue Shopping Center, Giant Plaza, First Presbyterian Church, South Side Shopping Center, two banks on State Street, addition to Akard Funeral Home, Eastridge and Westridge Apartments, numerous single family residents near Volunteer Parkway, National Guard Armory, Bristol Tennessee Housing Authority, Bristol Virginia Housing Authority, ESTU Administration Building, Memorial Hall, a portion of Bristol Memorial Hospital, Bristol Commons, Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites and Convention Center, Courtyard by Marriott, The Highlands Shopping Center, all the high schools in Smyth County, Va., Sheraton Ocean Inn in Rivera Beach, Fla., Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in Louisville, Ky., the dormitory at Morehead College and girls dormitory at Centre College in Danville, Ky., and many other buildings in the Tri-City area, Greeneville, Kentucky, and also built many water and sewer treatment plants across the county. He was one of the 10 men from Tennessee that went around the country to bring business and industry to the Bristol area. Mack was very involved in Tennessee politics. He was also very giving to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Grandfather Children's Home, Lees-McRea College and King College. Mack was the past president of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Tennessee Contractors Association and served on many boards including the Bank of Virginia. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Carol Trammell; daughter, Terri Block and husband, Chris of Matthews, N.C.; two grandsons, Christian Block of San Francisco, and Patrick Block of Knoxville; assistant for over 10 years, Marie Edmonson; his friend and CPA, Elizabeth Wilsman; his loyal caregiver and companion of 30 years, Stella Bachman; caregiver, Vickie Almany; mother-in-law, Mrs. Mabel Pennington; sister-in-law, Betty Barker and husband, Larry of Marion, Vs.; cousin, Harlan Trammell and wife, Sally of Winter Park, Fla.; good friend, Mary Lou Waak of Marion; his dog, "Baby"; and his many, many friends and employees that he thought of as his family. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. David Thompson, Dr. Jonathan Dixon, close friend, Barbara Smith, NP, Dr. Jim Scherenker, nurses, Jared Farmer and Pat Barnett and Debra Collins for making him comfortable during his last hours. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Totten officiating and music by Anthony Mangrum and Chosen Harmony. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Moneyhun, Jim Bowie, Roscoe Bowman, Footsie Pratt, Joe Watson, Eddie Canter, Tom Brooks, Pal Barger, Jim Rector, Don Cooper, Tim Carter, Thom Geshay, John Tickle, Prent Hallenbeck, Carl Moore, J.A. Street, J.D. Swartz, John Y. Merrill, Kurt Pomrenke, Ralph Kell, Josh Greenwood, Greg Little, Mark White, Mark Price, Greer Pendley, James Sword, Kelly Graham, Doy Rayburn, Gene Hensley and all his loyal employees that worked at Holiday Inn, Courtyard by Marriott and Bristol Lodging. The family will receive friends from 2 3:45 p.m. Saturday prior to the service. Those desiring may make memorials to the Smyth County Free Clinic, P.O. Carol, I am so sorry to have just learned of Mack's passing. I know that for alot of years it has been so terribly difficult to face each day - for both of you.
