Melanie was trully an inspiration to Jason and I- Jason and Mel were on the same cancer floor numerous times and I will always remember the last time we saw her in October when we ran into Evelyn in the hallway during one of jason's routine exams. I'm so glad we had the chance to pray with you all and just sit and talk for a bit. We were devastated to hear the news of her passing and our prayers and thoughts are with you all. I'm so sorry that this had to happen right at the holidays and with such young amazing children and family surrounding her.. we love you all and she will be sadly missed.. Sincerely, Jason and Randi Mcilwain

Melanie was the most genuine and caring person that we have ever met in our lives. She was the definition of a true friend and mother. She faught long and hard and with courage and so much strength, more than we have ever seen. She was so beautiful inside and out. She touched our lives in so many ways. Being with her the last few weeks of her life and the last moments at the hospital were sad of course but we were able to tell her all the things we wanted to say to her and we know she went in peace and without pain. She will live on forever in the memories we share with her. We cant say enough how truly wonderful she was and how much we are going to miss her. love you mel.

The first candle represents our grief.
The pain of losing you is intense.
It reminds us of the depth of our love for you.
This second candle represents our courage.
To confront our sorrow,
To comfort each other,
To change our lives.
This third candle we light in your memory.
For the times we laughed,
The times we cried,
The caring and joy you gave us.
This fourth candle we light for our love.
We light this candle that your light will always shine.
As we enter this holiday season and share this night of remembrance
with our family and friends.
We cherish the special place in our hearts
that will always be reserved for you.
We thank you for the gift
your living brought to each of us.
We love you.
We remember you.

I am blessed to have known Melanie through Monica Gross(Strope). She will live in my heart and mind as a beautiful, kind, graceful and giving daughter, sister, mother and friend. As much as she will be missed, she will forever be loved more. I feel grateful knowing she is watching over all of us. Love and prayers to Evelyn, the kids and all the family. Thank God for blessing us with Mel!

I got to know Melanie through my sister April, who also had Leukemia. How very sad for everyone who knew Melanie, for she was taken too young. Although it is heartbreaking for us, it is a joyous homecoming for Melanie. She ultimately did win her battle with Leukemia, not as we had hoped and prayed for, but perhaps, even better than we are capable of imagining; Melanie is now cancer free and forever young and beautiful. How ironic that 5 months to the day that I lost my sister, Melanie and April would be reunited. While they once shared space at Shadyside Hospital's cancer unit, they now share the majesty of Our Father's Mansion. Melanie was an inspiration to everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. She fought fiercely and was very active in her treatment. She fought with all she had for everyone she loved, and now everyone who loved her can love and live a better life, because of her.

Chris, Rio, Marina and Marcus,
My love and prayers continue to surround you, yet even more at this time. Melanie really fought the battle with determination, dignity and most of all, love!
Know that you will all remain in my thoughts and prayers.
