BELLEFONTAINE – Meredith Grace Stevens, 91, of Columbus, Ohio passed away peacefully at 10:15AM Friday, March 14, 2014 at Logan Acres Care Center, Bellefontaine, Ohio. The previous evening family and friends enjoyed a wonderful time, pizza and many remembrances of her life with her when she arrived at the care center.
She was born in Van Wert, Ohio on February 23, 1923, a daughter of the late Francis and Lenore (Horn) Jenkins. She was united in marriage to Ernest Stevens of Columbus, Ohio in the Fall of 1958 and he preceded her in death in July 1989. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Norman F. Jenkins and Herthel C. Jenkins and a niece, Carol Dawn Moore.
Meredith is survived by her sister, Louise (Audleigh) Purdin of Bellefontaine; nephews Jeffrey (Janet) Purdin of West Liberty, Charles "Chuck" (Ritsuko) Jenkins of West Mansfield and Warren Jenkins of Australia; nieces Sheryl (Philip) Godwin of Bellefontaine, Sandra Jordan of Kenton, Joyce (Mike) Barthauer of DeGraff; 7 great nephews, 6 great nieces and 20 great-great nephews and nieces and a good friend Maxine Newland of Bellefontaine. Because they spent time at her home, she was especially close to great nephews John (Cheryl) Godwin of Huntsville and Tyler (Julie) Godwin of Avondale, Arizona. She also left behind friends and neighbors, Fred "Sonny" and Donny Laytart, James and Betty Quinn, Catherine Cherryholm and a special niece Marilyn (Bill) Hoffman, all of Columbus.
A 1941 graduate of Middle Point High School, she attended the Beauty Academy of Columbus and was a beautician until her retirement. She was also the main caregiver for her husband, Ernie who had MS. She loved animals and enjoyed having "Larry" the bird and "Sammy" the cat as pets. The Reds, OSU Football and Basketball, the Browns, the Bengals, and golf were her interests as well as her family. She was a member of the Middle Point Presbyterian Church and when visiting with family in the area, she attended the Church of the Brethren and the First Church of God.
Visitation will be Friday, March 21, 2014 from 9-11am at EICHHOLTZ FUNERAL HOME, Bellefontaine with a graveside service to follow with Pastor A.W. Purdin officiating in Huntsville Cemetery, Huntsville, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Universal Home Health & Hospice, 700 S. Main St. Bellefontaine, OH 43311 or to the charity of your choice in Meredith's name.
