This has been very hard for me to do and I've been putting this off for a while but I can no longer keep this inside. Mike Addesso AKA gunny, to me AKA papa, was a great man and loved by many. He was loud, proud and a take it or leave kind of guy.
Papa,
You were truly one of the most important men in my life. I am going to miss your jokes and the random phone calls. I will always remember being your garage saling buddy or you paying me to call you Mr. Wonderful. Or the times where you would call me up and say " How's my #1? when are you dropping out of school or just quit already". I knew it was your way of asking if I'm doing good in school. You called me your #1 but I know you loved all 14 of us equally. It's very hard to accept that your gone but I know in my heart you will always be watching over me. This can't be goodbye but just see you later "dude" as you would say. I love you so much.. But until we meet again, your #1 Ashley

When I think about my dad I think about fishing, I think about having him help put a worm on a hook, garage sailing on a Sunday afternoon, garbage picking (we love free stuff!) and going to antique shops. My childhood consisted of driving around with him doing all of these things. I remember hanging out at the fish creek marina scratching off slot machine tickets and drinking shirley temples at 12 yrs old, talking to everyone who crossed our path. Some people liked him and some people didn't. Most of the time he imbarrassed me like you wouldn't believe but we always laughed about it later. It's been a long time since those days. I got older and life took over and these memories seemed to fade over time because of course there were many tough times too. I didn't always like the effect the war had on him but at the end of the day if I needed help, he was always there. Anybody who knew my dad knew to choose there words wisely because he was listening. He was very intuitive and could tell what a person was all about in five minutes after meeting them. He knew because he's done it all, he's been it all, good, bad, happy, sad, etc...He knew. It has been really difficult seeing him sick with with cancer. Just a few days before he passed he was fighting. He wanted to get more chemo to just give him a few more months. He was a fighter and he loved us and he did not want to miss a thing. Unfortunately our littlest ones will miss knowing there crazy pop pop. It's hard to process the fact that someone was just alive and gone just like that. Hate that it went the way it went. Peace to you on the other side Dad, Love you!

I REMEMBER MIKE I served with Mike 3 years in Marine Corps Recruiting duty on Long Island, N.Y. (1971-1974)----Mike being a native of Long Island made him a very valuable member of our team, he knew all good and bad of Long Island.---I remember that he was the driving force for the Marine Corps Birthday, we had the most beautiful and elegant Birthday Balls that I and my wife have ever attended! Due mostly to Mike.-------I remember that Gunny Mike was my go to guy when I needed something he was there for me and I might add I did not want to know all the details on how it was accomplished! ---I Remember that Gunny Mike might not be the best Marine I ever served with, BUT the up most tribute to Mike I can make is that no matter what the situation may be, I would want Mike Addesso on my side.
