Michael Baker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2025.
Washington, D.C. - Michael Nils Baker, 83, of Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at MedStar Georgetown Hospital. He was born on March 27, 1942, in Springfield, MA, the youngest child and only son of the late Louis Hyman Baker and Sylvia Uretsky Baker. Michael made Washington, D.C., his home for more than 50 years.

Michael lived a full and meaningful life. He graduated from his beloved University of Miami in 1964 and went on to earn a master's degree at the University of the District of Columbia. He began his career coordinating the speech program in the City of Alexandria Public Schools before pursuing his entrepreneurial spirit. Alongside his partner, Dennis Brown, they opened their first restaurant and bar, Baker Browns, which became the start of a long and successful venture. Together, they went on to open another two popular establishments: Mike Baker's on H Street and Mike Baker's 10th Street Grill. These spaces brought joy, laughter, and friendships to countless people, including 79 marriages that Michael proudly kept track of.

Most recently, Michael became a cherished host and "historian" at Martin's Tavern, where he greeted patrons with warmth, wit, and friendship. He truly treasured his years there and the many relationships he built.

In 2013, Michael received the gift of life through a kidney transplant from a dear friend, an act of generosity for which he and his family remain forever grateful.

Michael had a zest for life. He loved gambling, sharing football betting tips, and telling jokes that made everyone laugh. He had a way of teaching those around him to enjoy life regardless of circumstances.

He will be deeply missed by family and friends in Washington, D.C., New York, Iowa, and Miami.

Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Connie Accola Baker of Washington, D.C.; his sister, Joan Renee Picket, and her husband, Joel Ian Picket of Harrison, NY; his cousin, who was like a second sister to him, Diane Weinstock of Westport, CT; his brother-in-law, Lowell Accola, and his wife, Georga Accola of Brooklyn, NY; his sister-in-law, Linda Handsaker of Ames, Iowa; his nephew, David Picket, and his wife, Rona Picket of Larchmont, NY; his niece, Allison Fehrenbaker, and her husband, Lawrence Fehrenbaker of Scarsdale, NY; his nephew, Ben Handsaker of Ames, Iowa; his niece, Madolyn Accola, and her husband, Eric Braunstein of Lake Mohegan, NY; and many beloved great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Michael's caregivers in the ICU at MedStar Georgetown Hospital.
