Michael Barretti Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2018.
Born December 28, 1944 Brooklyn, New York to the parents of Anna Maria Palazzolo and Ralph Richard Barretti. Michael graduated from Archbishop Molloy High School in Jamaica, New York. Michael was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1966 and became a Trinitarian monk for 10 years in Maryland. He pursued a secular life and received a bachelor's degree, 2 masters degrees, and a doctorate. Michael was a nationally certified school psychologist and worked many years for the Baltimore city school system. Later in his career, he was a college professor for psychology and professional counseling at Carroll Community college and McDaniel college. In 2001 Michael moved to Tucson/Green Valley, Arizona and continued his professional career as a professor and counselor. Michael was a church organist and accomplished harpsichordist. Since the age of 8, Michael was in love with growing and learning about plants at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. He had a special affinity for orchids and was the president of the Maryland and Tucson Orchid Society. After the monastery, Michael continued his life of service by counseling young adults for little to no money. Michael always believed and said," I like working with youngsters, because the human race marches forward on tiny feet." Surviving his spouse Dr. James Trout, sister, Maria Tafuri, brother, Thomas Barretti, nieces, Justine and Lisa, and nephew, Thomas Jr.

Former student. Dr. Barretti was pure sunshine. 15 years later I can still hear his laugh, especially at his own jokes. One time a student wandered into our class and he told them they didn´t look familiar. When they left he laughed saying the guy didn´t know he was legally blind. His sense of humor, wit, and kind heart will forever be missed. His legacy lives on in the many lives he´s impacted. I can still hear his favorite line " I´ll eat my degrees if I´m wrong..." .

John and I had the pleasure of being Mike's friend. From having dinner, visiting and making sure he had the perfect orchid for my wedding bouquet. He will truly be missed. We loved Mike. A wonderful man.

I had the pleasure of having Dr. Barretti as a professor at CCC. I took all of my psych classes under him because of his bigger than life personality. I am sorry to hear of his passing.
